Sunday 8th – Tuesday 10th July 2-13 – Isle of Man trip for “Our Robot Overlords”

On Sunday morning at just before 8am we all left home to drive to Gatwick airport, to get on a flight to the Isle of Man where we would all be taking part in one days filming of a HUGE film called “Our Robot Overlords” (for those of you that don’t know, my hubby Mark co wrote it with Jon Wright). We left the car at the airport and after all the security and check in stuff we got on our plane. Now I’ve flown a fair few times to various places (Spain, Gran Canaria, Cyprus, St Lucia, Portugal), and on various size planes, but they always have engines. This little plane however had propellers!! I’m not a nervous flyer, but this did make me a little apprehensive, as I was wondering if we’d actually get off the ground. The plane was small and only seated about 70 people, but was only half full. We did take off, very successfully, and were on our way to that little island in between the Lake District and Northern Ireland. We landed 1 hour later at the Isle of Man airport, which is very quiet, and unassuming. Everyone on the island is very pleasant, and helpful, to Mark and I it seemed a little like the town Sandford in the film “Hot Fuzz”. The cab driver told us all sorts of interesting facts about the island on our little journey to our hotel. For the rest of the day we took it easy, as we knew that the Monday would be hectic. We watched the tennis and were overjoyed when Andy Murray won. Fab job!! After a sleep (there’s nothing better that your own bed) we had breakfast and walked down the road to the Castle Mona Hotel. It used to be a hotel, and looked like it was very beautiful, but is now closed and very run down. The outside looks very dull, and looks like it’s made of grey breeze blocks. The crew were all busy, and we went off to the costume department to be “Chaved up!!” All will become clear when you watch the film. We had a fantastic day filming, very tiring, and hot, but worth all that when you see the final film. Jon is a brilliant director, very calm, and makes time for everyone. The kids in the film were brilliant, and a few other cast members that we saw. I’m not going to give away too much as it’ll spoil it for you. We finished filming about 7pm and went back to our hotel, ordered room service, and all had an early night as we needed to get up really early the following morning to fly home. Tuesday at 4.45am!! Yes that’s right, this was the start of the longest school run in history. We all got up as the cab was picking us up at 5.15am, we just got dressed, washed and brushed our teeth and then off to check out. When we arrived at the airport there were only 2 other passengers there, and a few staff. It’s bizarre really when you’re always used to having to arrive at the airport 2 hours before you flight, and then when you go the a quiet place like this it’s just 30 minutes. We could have stayed in bed for an extra 45 minutes or so. Never mind. We had breakfast, and then got on the plane again to travel back to Gatwick.  As we were going through security, John Rhys-Davies was in front of us, the kids know his as Sallah in “Indiana Jones”. We landed back at Gatwick in good time, got straight in the car and drove to school, stopping off to get the kids their lunch. When I was doing this they were getting changed into their school uniforms in the car (I’d put it in the boot all ready for them). When I returned with their lunch, it was time to drop them off. I said to the schools, I’d have them in school between 9.30am-10am, and sure enough George was in at 9.35am, and Emily was in at 9.50am. So right on time, then Mark and I went home and had a cup of tea. We were all knackered by 8.30pm, so we all went to bed, and slept really well. There is nothing better than your own bed. I just love ours very much.

Friday 5th July 2013 – If we had no weeds, gardening would be much easier.

Whoever invented weeds should be given a good, stern talking to. They’re a pain in the bottom, and like all gardeners we dislike them very much. If anyone knows a way to get rid of them forever, please let me know, as I will love you always! I spent the best part of 2 hours meticulously sorting through the bed that has carrots and shallots growing in it. The bind weed is such a bind (excuse the pun) and the thistles are painful. I nearly finished the one bed I was working on, but ran out of time, so I have a little bit left to do next week. I had a few spaces, so have sown some more Carrots “Nantes 5” and have now used up all my Shropshire Seaweed Fertiliser, so I’ll have to order some more. It really seems to work well, and the plants love it. I’ve only given them 1 feed each, but they seem to have had a burst of growth from it. Maybe I’ll buy 2 bottles as I’m sure 1 won’t be enough. The temperature was wonderful today about 25 degrees I think, and tomorrow is going to be hotter still. It acturally feels like summer now which is wonderful. I’m a happy bunny….apart from the weeds.

Thursday 4th July 2013 – Finally all my cabbages are in, yippee!!

Well I started by weeding one rather large bed, which took me all morning. I was getting a little peckish, but decided that when I’d finished weeding and watering that bed, then it was time for lunch. I’m so stern with myself. But like a good little girl, I finished it, and then sat down and had lunch. Then afterwards I weeded another bed, trimmed the lettuce that had started to bolt (it should re grow as it’s a cut and come again), and then in some space I planted the final few of my “Primo” Cabbage. I was so exhausted by the time I’d finished I managed to cover them with netting, and will make it more secure tomorrow. I them came home, made myself a cup of tea, and watched this weeks “Love your Garden”. The kids then arrived home. Another busy day, but the sun is shinning, so what could be better.

Tuesday 2nd July 2013 – Busy, busy little lady I am!

I should have written this yesterday, but just didn’t have time, so sorry about that. But I spent nearly 5 hours on the allotment today. I did take some lunch with me, so I wouldn’t go hungry. I need food to keep me going, as I do get rather peckish. I managed to thoroughly weed and water 8 beds, some are rather big, and then I watered them well using the organic seaweed fertiliser. I also filled in some holes with some Calabrese “Blestar” that I’d been meaning to get in a few weeks ago. Still there’s still time. I was exhausted when I got home, but that’s nothing new, so a quick sit down with a cup of tea before I had to start dinner. Hot bath and an early night.

Monday 1st July 2013 – Had a good old sort out.

After a glorious weekend, not only the weather being so wonderful, but Mark and I went to a party on Saturday (I was very good and only had 2 glasses of wine), and then our 4th (yes I’m counting) BBQ on Sunday. We had s’mores for pudding which is always great fun. We melt 1 large marshmallow over the coals, and then use 2 chocolate digestive biscuits either side. They’re very yummy, you must give them ago. Anyway, I digress, so it was time to get my shorts on and get down the allotment this morning for a couple of hours before I had to be at school to help year 6 with their end of year play. I’m a very busy girl you know!! I spent the morning doing something not hugely interesting, but very necessary. I weeded a bed very thoroughly and then watered thoroughly adding some of the Shropshire seaweed fertiliser to the water as well. I’m getting through it fairly fast, as I’ve got a lot of space and plenty to water. But it seems to be amazing stuff. I first used it on the plants in the greenhouse and they seemed to love it, so I’m expecting great things from the plants on the allotment. I managed to sort out 8 beds in 2 and a half hours, so I was really pleased. I’ll do more tomorrow, but I get to spent most of the day playing tomorrow, so that’ll be fun. I’d better go, as Mark and I are having a prawn curry tonight (made from scratch), so I’d better get cooking.

Thursday 27th June 2013 – All the beans are in, and I had a pleasant surprise.

A HUGE amount was done today, and before I knew where I was, I’d been on my plot for just over 2 hours, it was just after noon, and time to go home for lunch. I got all my “Purple Teepee” Dwarf French beans in today. They’ve been filling in lots of little holes, so now all they need to do is grow beautifully, which I’m sure they will. I finished weeding another bed, and found some lovely parsnips growing underneath all the weeds. They’ve not come through as well as I’d hoped, and not a good as other years, but as I’m the only one in the house that eats them, I guess not having too many is a good thing. I sowed some more “White Lisbon” Spring Onions, and another row of “Nantes 5” Carrots, picked some more strawberries, and finally I started digging the last bed at the end that I was dreading. I was pleasantly surprised, as it wasn’t as hard as I’d imagined it to be. But I did come across several red ants nest, and knelt on one, and the little bugger stung/bit (not sure what they do) me through my leggings to my knee! It’s still is swollen and red, horrible little bugger! Now this evening it’s off to do some Karaoke, as Mark is leaving work, and they’re having a bit of a goodbye thing for him. I can’t really sing, so I don’t know how I’m going to fair. A serious amount of wine is going to have to be consumed before I get up and sing in front of people I only know through Mark’s work. It’s bad enough when we have a music night in Spain and I have to sing in front of my family.

Wednesday 26th June 2013 – Weed…and not the illegal type.

Had a jolly, spiffing time on the allotment this morning. I don’t quite know why I’m being all posh, but there you got. It must have been something I ate! Anyway, I managed to weed loads today. I finished the onion bed, and then gave them a good old water, and then started weeding another bed that I’ve got various seeds and chard in. The Chard is doing amazingly, but has bolted, so I’m cutting off the seed heads and taking any leaves and stalks that are ok. I’ve also started to weed the rest of that bed, and I’ve found some seeds growing that I’d sown earlier in the season. The Salsify are doing really well, they look like blades of grass, so it’s very easy to mistake them for that. I’ve found some carrots, and am pulling up the last of the first row of radish that I sowed. In any of the spaces that I create I’m planting in my “Purple Teepee” Dwarf beans, so they’ll be dotted all over my plot. I couldn’t bring myself to start turing over the final bed, but will have to be brave and attempt it soon. I think I got bitten on my shin by a red ant, but it’s not a bad one, and the first of this season, so I think I’m doing really well. In the greenhouse at home I’ve got some little baby tomatoes that have appeared. I’ve told them that I’m very proud of them, and they’re so beautiful. I never talked in a baby voice to my kids when they were little, but I do to my plants. Is that a little weird?

Tuesday 25th June 2013 – Tomatoes and Cabbage, not something you’d put together.

Another splendid morning on the allotment, as I’ve finally got all my “Moneymaker” Tomatoes in. I’m not sure if they’re from Thompson and Morgan or Mr Fothergill’s, but they all seem to be growing really well. Hopefully blight won’t affect the ones on the allotment, but if they do I’ve got loads in the greenhouse at home. I also got in all my Cabbage “All year round blend”. I seem to have cabbages everywhere, oh well! I also managed to clear the bed I’ve been turning over and weeded yet more. It’s starting to look better, but I’ve now got to tackle a bed that wasn’t turned over at all last year. I’m not looking forward to that!

Close to 1,000,000 views!!

Never in a million (please excuse the phrasing) years would I have ever expected my little old Claire’s Allotment You Tube Channel to be at this amazing mile stone. In August 2007 Mark mentioned about me doing gardening videos for You Tube and I believe my words were “Who’d want to watch that?” I’m not often wrong (I am a women after all) but I do admit that I was wrong about this. People watched and commented on my videos, to my utter surprise. And now just over 5 and a half years later I’m very close to one million views. I would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to you all for putting up with me, and listening to my little musings. You seem to have enjoyed them, and the comments have been fantastic. You watch from all over the world which is amazing. I never could have imagined it would have got this far. There will be more videos as the summer goes on, as gardening never stops, well not for me anyway. Thank you xx xx

Monday 24th June 2013 – First strawberries, summer must be here.

Well I got very excited this morning when I looked at my strawberry beds, as I had quite a few that were ready for picking. I think we’ve got enough for us all to have enough for pudding this evening, even though I had to try just one to see if it was ok. Well, you’ve got to haven’t you. It was so sweet and delicious, and tasted just like summer. There are a few more that are nearly ready, so give it a couple of days and I’ll be picking some more. I also harvested some more radish. They seem to be growing brilliantly, what ever the weather is, and I planted in my “Blue Lake” Climbing French beans. They’d been acclimatising on the garden table, but the wind has been so strong that it had burnt the leaves, so I had to throw some out as the growing tips had been burnt away. Still I had enough to put on my wig wams, so that’s ok. I also managed to dig more of another bed which I’ll be putting some other bits in, most probably more brassicas, but I’ll make that decision when I come to it.
