Thursday 3rd April 2014 – Nearly there with the Onions.

That’s another 57 onions planted today, only 2 more trays to go. So far that’s 205 onions planted so far!! That should keep us going for a while over the winter and into the spring. Another fun filled morning for me, which comprised of weeding, manuring and wood chipping. It’s getting there, I feel like I’m making progress and there is light at the end of the tunnel. I may even take up some potatoes tomorrow and start to get those in. The kids break up for the Easter holidays tomorrow, but they’re old enough for me to pop down to the allotment for a bit. They have strict instructions about what to do and not do, and I’m not far away if they have a problem. I must email my friend Clair as I need more manure, and she has a trailer that she can attach to the back of her car. I feel lots more shovelling to come.

The Bootleg Beatles.

Last night Mark and I took the kids to see The Bootleg Beatles at the Royal Albert Hall. We’d never seen them before, and also none of us had even seen the actual Beatles sing live before as we’re all too young. I think my mum went to see the Beatles, but before Beatlemania began. My dad is a huge fan of them, but again, I don’t think has never seen them live. The Bootleg Beatles are the next best thing, and are amazing. They played for an hour, then had a quick break, then played for another hour and a half. Everyone was up and dancing and having a wonderful time. They played so many well known songs, starting from the beginning, dressed in grey suits, and then changing clothes and moving on to Sergeant Pepper, and then beyond, to just before they split. For me the best bits were, when George Harrison played “My guitar Gently Weeps”, it was just him onstage playing and a small orchestra in the back ground. And also “Hey Jude”, everyone was singing, and swaying along. I looked round at this point, and saw the whole audience doing the same thing, it must have been amazing looking out from the stage. If you ever get a chance, go and see them, it’s so worth it.

Wednesday 2nd April 2014 – I haven’t used those muscles for a while!

Now I’m quite a strong little lass, after all I’m a church bell ringer, so I regard myself as being fairly strong on the upper part of my body. Bell ringing is very good for you as it exercises all sorts of muscles on your top half, as well as several in your lower half, and also your brain (you may beg to differ on this one). But I’ve been doing a huge amount of digging in the last week or so, and have found some muscles that haven’t been used for a while. They’re mainly across the tops of my shoulders and the bottom half of my neck, they don’t ache, but sometimes get a little stiff. I’m not sure if it’s all the digging or my age? I’ve got loads more digging to do in the next few months, so I’ll put them through their paces and get them working again. Talking about digging I managed to finish turning over the rest of a huge bed, and a small one today, and covered them in horse manure. One bed is going to have potatoes in, and the other the rest of the onions. I planted another 64 onions today, so I’m getting there slowly but surely. It’s been another warm day, not wall to wall sunshine, but still lovely and no fog. It did start to blob fat rain just as I left, but it didn’t last long, and was quite a nice surprise. We’re out tonight seeing the Bootleg Beatles, so I’d better have a shower before I go. I don’t think anyone will appreciate me smelling of horse manure.

Tuesday 1st April 2014 – Onions away!!

Yes I know it’s April Fools’s day, and our daughter Emily confused us this morning with the cereal (she changed the inside packets over). She told us she was bored! But I think the weather was playing tricks on us this morning. When I woke at 7am the sun was shining and the sky was lovely and blue. Another wonderful day was in store. But then I looked out at about 8.45 and thick fog had closed in? Yes you heard me correctly! Where had the sun gone? The fog stayed with us until about 11am, when it went as quickly as it arrived. Then out came the sun again, and all was happy. I spent two and a half hours on the plot this morning, the first hour and a half in the fog. I did a bit of filming, someone wanted to see me sow Parsnips again, but instead of sowing in a line, I sowed in a block. This year I’ve sown Palace F1, not sown them before, so it’ll be interesting to see how they turn out. Then I did some more digging, weeding and manuring, and started to get in some of my onion sets. Unlike the garlic all the onions that I started off in half toilet rolls have sprouted beautifully and have got loads of wonderful roots growing. Today I planted 84, and that’s not even half of them. I’ll get some more in tomorrow as it’s supposed to be another brilliant day….hopefully no more fog though.

Monday 31st March 2014 – Planted my garlic out.

To be honest, I’m not that impressed with the garlic that I got this year from Mr Fothergills. When I unwrapped the 4 bulbs when it arrived about half of each bulb was rotten, and the few that I did manage to plant, it only added up to 28 cloves. It should have been more than double that. Then out of those 28, I had to throw away about 8 today, as they had gone mouldy and not sprouted or even produced any roots. So that’s a bit crap to be honest. Even some of the cloves that I planted outside today seemed a bit soft, so I’m not holding out for anything major this year. Anyway, apart from that I managed to dig over another bed, which is rather large, as I’m going to start to put my onions in tomorrow, and them the potatoes can go in. I’m hoping to get all the onions in by friday. You may be thinking “How long does she think that’ll take?”, but I do have about 250 to plant in straight rows! I’ve also had a “Live Chat” with someone at Tesco, as I had to change my number over to my new phone. It’s the first time I’ve done one of those, and it was quite interesting. I’m no longer a “Live Chat Virgin”.

Mothers’ Day – Sunday 30th March 2014

Well I got another couple of pressies today, as it was Mothers’ Day. For my birthday Mark got me a new phone. So I’ve gone from having the crappiest phone in the family to now having the best phone. It’s rather strange, as I’ve now got a smart phone, and will have to say goodbye to my Nokia, which I’ve had for about 8 years! Yes I get very attached to things. The kids started the day by bringing me tea in bed, but they gave me the wrong tea, so I had to remake it. Still the thought was there. We do have 3 tea caddies in our kitchen: George’s normal PG Tips, Mark’s Redbush and my fruit teas. I can smell the difference, but others can’t. I then got to unwrap my pressies. The kids got me a new case for my phone, which I can use at home, and Mark got me a super strong case for my phone when I go down the allotment. Apparently it’s made for the US Military and can withstand a tank. So it should be fine for the allotment. Later on we went to pick up Mark’s mum Pat, and spend the rest of the day walking round Nymans. Mark bought both us mum’s lunch, and  Pat then bought us all an ice cream. I spent some of my money in the shop and purchased lots of herb plants. I’m having to re do the herb bed at home as many have been in for years and several got trampled on when our fencing was put up. Then it was home for Paella for dinner and I think I fell asleep on the sofa about 9pm. I think it was all to do with the clocks going forward the night before, and I lost and hours sleep…that or the 3 glasses of wine. It’s Mothers’ Day, so who’s counting!!

Rumble, rumble!

It keeps on raining and rumbling outside, so it’s lucky I’m inside writing another Lottie and Dottie story. This one is about a type of flower, but you’ll have to wait til next year for it to be published. Don’t forget that Lottie and Dottie Sow Carrots is out in a couple of weeks!!

Wednesday 26th March 2014 – Strike Day!

Well today was a school strike day for both my 2, even though they’re at different schools. They were supposed to stay at home and do “Independent home Learning”, but I wasn’t going to have any of that. So I took them on an “Educational visit”. They’re still learning, and exercising, so that’s good enough for me. We went to Standen, which is a National Trust place in West Sussex. It only takes just under an hour from where we live, so that’s good. We arrived at around 10.30 ish, and went and had a look round the gardens. They’re beautiful, very large and the perfect place to play Hide and Seek according to Emily and George. The House was built in 1890, and is set in 12 acres. I only want 1 acre, and a slightly bigger house. We found a wonderfully secret Quarry Garden, which had a pond in the middle.

A wonderful vegetable garden ready for sowing, and a greenhouse with seedlings sprouting away.

They also had a Plantation Play Area, where we all played on the wooden bridge, round the maze and acted out scenes in the little theatre. Several people went past as we were in full acting mode, I think they were a bit worried by what we were doing.

If you didn't hold on you fell over. I did!

I can't remember what they were acting out, but George can be very funny.

At lunch the kids had a hot chocolate, and I had a tea. George enjoyed his hot chocolate so much he seemed to get it all over his face.

The remains of his hot chocolate on the bridge of his nose and right cheek!

After looking round the house in the afternoon and played the game of which bedroom we’d like. George got to have a go on an old fashioned typewriter, which he found rather tricky as the keys aren’t as sensitive as the computer keyboard. I bought them both an ice cream (yes I know, but then they’d eat one in the depths of winter), and I had another tea before we came home.

A very enjoyable day, and would go there again, but this time in the summer when it’s warmer.

Monday 24th March 2014 – Got to burn off all that food!

After a food filled weekend, I need to burn it all off up the allotment. I ate so much over the weekend, I put on 2lbs! It may not seem much, but it’ll soon add up. Anyway, I’m not going back to “play” in the gym, I much prefer the allotment for that. So I dug over another rather large bed and covered it with manure. I also wood chipped more paths, and dug up the remains of my Salsify.…and a rogue potato which is jacket sized. So that’s a start. There weren’t many of us on site today, maybe it was a little chilly for some. But there were some new plot holders being shown around. The first thing that came to my mind was that scene from Matilda, when Miss Trunchbull says “Ah! Fresh meat!” Hopefully I’ll see them again soon, I’m not sure which plots they were being shown.

My birthday weekend away!!

Let’s just say that I’m no longer in my 30’s. I was getting a bit freaked out about no longer having a 3 at the beginning of my age, but now it’s turned into a 4, it’s not so bad. Mark whisked me away for the weekend (Thursday-Saturday), and spoilt me rotten. My parents were over, so they looked after the kids. We went to Anglesey, Wales, and stayed in a wonderful hotel called Tre-Ysgawen Hall, which had a Spa! It’s a long drive from where we live, 308 miles to be exact, but was well worth the drive. As soon as we arrived we had a cup of tea, then straight in the spa, making full use of the pool, sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi. After that long drive it was very relaxing. Then we had a lovely dinner in the hotel (to be honest the nearest restaurant would have been at least half and hours drive if not more). After a couple of glasses of cooled Prosecco (Mark had ordered this especially) it was time to go to sleep. When I woke the following morning it was my birthday, and Mark made me a cup of tea in bed, and I opened my card. I left all my other cards at home, and was going to open them when we got back on Saturday. For some reason we decided that the best way to start my birthday celebrations would be to go and “Play on the equipment” in the hotels gym. Mark goes to the gym 3 times a week, and this was, I believe, the first time I have ever set foot in one. I played on various things, including the big round ball, which I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do on them. After a lovely breakfast of a proper Welsh fry up which included: Bacon, Sausage, Fried bread, Tomatoes, Mushrooms, and Black pudding (it was the first time I’d tried that, and it was ok, but not something I’d write home about). I passed on the Egg, as they don’t agree with me now…it must be my age!! There was also cereal, toast, fruit, meats, and yoghurts. So after eating loads for breakfast, bearing in mind I usually only have Mini Wheats and a bit of dried fruit, we left to spend the day sight seeing. As we were leaving the lady on the front desk mentioned that there was a leak coming from either our bathroom or the room next door, so they would be moving us to another room. Not a problem, but we’d be upgraded apparently. So off we went on our day of fun. First we drove to PortMeirion, where they filmed The Prisoner. It’s a bizarre place, with buildings that don’t seem to go together, but some how work. It was rather windy, but we snuggled close to each other as we walked along the sea wall. If you’re ever in the North of Wales, go and visit, it really is a beautiful place. We then went to Caernarfon Castle, which is the place where Prince Charles became Prince of Wales. It’s again a very strange place, where parts of the castle have completely fallen down, and other parts that look very derelict. Mark and I climbed to the top of one of the towers, were Marks fear of heights kicked in, and I had to hold his hand. After leaving we went into the town and had lunch before we drove back to our hotel. When we arrived back at the hotel, we found that we had been up graded, oh boy had we. We now were the proud owners of a room with a massive Four Poster Bed!! It was then time to get back in the Spa, and I had a back massage booked for late afternoon. After that I managed to find my way back to our room, and finished off the rest of the Prosecco. I was a very relaxed, happy bunny. Dinner in the evening was a 5 course affair, which was wonderful. Having seen loads of little lambs bounding around in fields, we both had lamb for our main course. It was delicious, so I didn’t feel guilty at all. We had tea and coffee after our meal in the hotels Library, and were the only people in there. Then it was time for bed, and the end to a perfect birthday. On the Saturday after another lovely breakfast, I had smoked haddock with a welsh rarebit sauce on, a croissant, yoghurt and fruit. We popped down to the spa for the final time before checking out just before 11am. The staff were all amazing, and so friendly. I would go there again, if only it was closer. On our way home we stopped off at Little Moreton Hall to stretch our legs, have a cup of tea and a Scone (Mark and I say it differently. He says it like “Gone” and I say it like “Phone”). It’s a very rickety old place, very uneven, and started falling into the moat that surrounds it, but has been held together by steel bars. Then it was the final leg home, with a quick stop on the way to have another cup of tea and a visit to the loo. We arrived home about 6pm, and the kids came running down the stairs to hug us. I then opened all my pressies and cards. My dad had made a wonderful curry for us, and a couple of glasses of wine later I was asleep on the sofa. Perfect weekend, and such a perfect birthday. I’m pleased to now be 40!!! Thank you to my wonderful Husband Mark for making it oh so wonderful and special. I love you very much xxxx.
