Are we not supposed to do this?

Snails have wings? I didn’t you know they could fly! Oh, we do have to help them a bit though. Fabulous story on the BBC…  But only do when the neighbours don’t notice.

Did you watch the Allotment show?

I found this programme very interesting. What wonderfully clean and weed free plots they had to start with. I don’t think any of us have every achieved that, I know I haven’t. A lovely mixture of contestants, in age, and relationships, and a couple of very smartly dressed ladies. On their plots they seem to be growing a mixture of both vegetables, fruit and flowers. I do love sweet peas they have a wonderful fragrance. I do tend to keep my flowers for the garden at home, and only a few on the allotment to help attract the bees to aid pollination. The first challenge of growing some radish, and it was lovely to see the variety of radish that you could get, and no one seemed to grow the same. The purple radish were my favourite, I’ll have to find some of those. I was a little disappointed as they didn’t show you how to sow them in great detail, it was as though they assumed you’d know. But there are some people watching who may not have know, so for those of you, here’s my little video on How to sow Radish. The bouquets they made for the second challenge were all very beautiful, some larger that others, and the third and final challenge was very colourful. They had to make a curd and a jam. I love curds and jams and make loads of jam in the summer. Curds are a little trickier to make, but I have very successfully made some lemon curd. I think my favourite was the blueberry curd that was made, it was fluorescent purple, it would look fab on a bit of crumpet! It was sad to see the first pair go, but I’m wondering what happens to their plot that they’ve loved and cared for since March? Are they allowed to come back and harvest their goodies or is it left to go bad? Seems a huge waste if it is left. Does any one know?

Wednesday 16th April 2014 – That’s all folks!

I’m not stopping my allotment if that’s what you’re thinking, on the contrary. This season is just getting interesting. I’ve finally got to the end of all the seedlings that, at the moment, need potting up. The greenhouse is getting very full now, and once the other seeds that I sowed a couple of weeks ago come through, I really don’t know where I’m going to put them. I’m sure I’ll find space somewhere. So that’s the Chop Suey Greens, Broccoli “Red Arrow Sprouting”, Kale “Black Tuscany” and Cabbage “All Year Round” all done. I’ve taken what I need, and put some by for my sister, and then some for the allotment plant sale. What a busy afternoon that was. Better clean my nails before we go out tonight, they’re a bit dirty. I took the kids swimming this morning, and we had the pool nearly to ourselves. George and I timed ourselves doing 25 meter lengths. He managed 30 seconds swimming front crawl, and I managed 23. I then had a race with him where he did front crawl and I did breast stroke. It was tough keeping pace with him, and we were neck and neck til the very end. I didn’t have a problem with my swimming costume like I did last time, as I have purchased a new one, which is very comfortable. George is getting very good at diving, not something I can do at all. Emily was happy just to pootle about swimming. We had a great time, it’s fun swimming with them now they’re confident in the water.

The Big Allotment Challenge.

Will you be watching tonight? I will, with great interest. Not just because it’s about allotments, but because my friend Sally and I auditioned last year for this. We got down to the last 12 pairs of people, and they needed 9 pairs. Still never mind! The Big Allotment Challenge tonight on BBC2 at 8pm. Good luck to everyone involved, and hope you have fun.

Monday 14th April 2014 – More potting on.

Well this afternoon I spent more time potting on some seedlings. Today was the turn of the Cabbage “Primo (II)” and the Brussels Sprouts “Camelot F1”. I started with the Brussels and apparently there were supposed to be 40 seeds in the packet. I potted on 36 for myself, then 9 for my sister, and I was still left with at least another 15 -20! Most of them were a bit small and scrawny, so not really any good for anyone. I then moved on to my Cabbage. Why would a pack have 500 seeds in, and then they expect you to use them all in 2 years? I know we love cabbage, but just think of the wind it would produce!! Anyway, I potted on again 36 for myself, and 9 for my sister, and will have to have a think about what to do with the rest. I must have about 20 or so left, but we’ve got an allotment plant sale coming up in May, so I’ll see if I can find space to store them until then. That’s all for today, see you tomorrow…..Claire out!

Monday 14th April 2014 – And then there were more!

I had a quick look at my birdies today, and this is what I saw….10 little eggs all neatly huddled together. I’m very proud.

Sunday 13th April 2014 – Let’s get potting up!

I spent the afternoon in the greenhouse sorting out various seedlings and potting them up. The greenhouse is getting quite full now, which is great. I’m having to shuffle bits about to make extra room. But I’ve still got loads more to sow, so that’ll be fun finding space for them. So far I potted up my Butternut Squash “Hercules”, Kohl Rabi “Modrava” and my Cauliflower “Graffiti”. I took the very best for myself, and the next best I’ve potted up and will give to my sister. I did the same last year, and she got a variety of seedlings as and when I did them. She’s only got a small garden (smaller than mine actually) and so uses the borders and various pots to plant all her fruit and vegetables in. With the allotment this morning and the garden this afternoon, I’m pooped, so pj’s on and time for bed (said Zebedee).
