Friday 26th June 2015 – 2 trips to the allotment!!

Today was a funny sort of day. I was supposed to be down the allotment all morning and had to leave by about noon because we were having a new car delivered between 1-5pm. I would just like to point out that the company Mark works for insisted that we get a new car and we’re not treating ourselves. We’d had our old one for 6 years, 2 years longer than we were supposed to, as we kept asking to hang on to it because we loved it so much. But the time had come, so we chose a new one. However, I had just got in the allotment site and was just unpacking my stuff when my phone went and the man delivering our new car told me he would be to my house in about 45 minutes time!! He had travelled all the way from the Midlands with the car on a low loader, so I wasn’t going to tell him to wait. So after only having to time put another staging section and another 6 Tomatoes in the greenhouse I came home and waited. The man arrived shortly afterwards and after off loading the car and giving me a tour of how to work it and stuff he left. After lunch I then went back down the allotment, this time in the new car. It only had 9 miles on the clock when we got it. It has that new car smell to it, which will soon go. But it’s very lovely and comfortable to drive. I continued with the weeding and cutting of the long grass. The Broad beans are now free of weeds and I feel like I’m making some progress on getting plot 1 under control. After a couple of hours I then came home, but didn’t want to park the new car next to the old car just incase it got upset. Mark said I was being sill, maybe I am, but I don’t know about you, but I get very attached to our car. The old car is being collected on Monday, so for an entire weekend we have TWO cars!! How exciting!!

Our new car. Only about 4 inches shorter that our old one, but very comfortable to drive.

Thursday 25th June 2015 – I have begun sorting Plot 1!!!

Well it is very hot and humid today. Carol Kirkwood said it would get up to 24 degrees today. But when I came home from the allotment just before 2pm it read 26 degrees!! Apparently next week is supposed to be hotter, but we’ll soon see if that’s true when we come to next week. It’s definitely time to get the shorts and vest tops out for the allotment, short leggings and a t shirt is too hot. Now on to Plot 1. I’m not going to show you a before shot, because I’m far too embarrassed about it, but I’ll show you the progression of each bed as and when I sort it out. It actually looks worse than it is. There is tall grass round most of it, and weeds that are actually fairly easy to remove, so I managed to get through more than I expected today. The first bed was the Rhubarb bed which wasn’t bad because I’d sorted that a couple of weeks ago. And the bed with Parsnips, Onions and Carrots in was ok. Once I’d weeded a bed, I then thoroughly watered and fed it. I then came onto the Strawberry bed, which is huge in itself. I harvested some strawberries, but I think this bed will be easier to sort out when the strawberries have finished, so I’ll just try and keep the weeds at bay for the time being. The strawberry runners from last year have ended up all over the paths, so I’m having to sort those out and am replanting them in tyres all around my plots. I’m getting 6 plants in each tyre, and any new runners I find this year, I’m cutting off. I think that having over 150 strawberry plants is enough for anyone don’t you? I then used my shears and cut the grass along a huge section of plot 1 and even this has made it look much better, but there is still a long way to go. Once I’d had my lunch I then put in the first of the new staging in my greenhouse and the first 6 Tomatoes in it. I’ll make another lot up later today and will take that down tomorrow. I can only fit one made up staging section in the car at a time, and the 6 tomato plants to go in it. So it’ll be a slow progress on getting them all down to the allotment, but never mind. It’s easier to make the staging up in my garden, as I can sit on the grass and am less likely to then get bitten on the bum by some red ants (they really like biting my knees though). Well that’s all for today. I’ll continue tomorrow and let you know what I accomplish. So until the TTFN!!

Wednesday 24th June 2015 – The farty veggies are in!!

Well some people think that Brussels Sprouts make you fart, but others disagree. To be honest we don’t need any help in our house when it comes to being wind, at BOTH ends, not just the one end. So this morning I planted out 24 Brussels Sprout plants. Make sure you protect them also from the birds and our slimy foes. They won’t be ready to harvest until the winter, so they’re an “investment vegetable”. If you don’t have the room for them, don’t worry. Mine did really well last year, so hopefully they will again this year. If you are down wind of us I can only apologise in advance, sorry!!

24 Brussels Sprout plants neatly in 3 rows!!

Once these were in, it was onto more weeding. This time the Jerusalem Artichoke bed. It is the last bed that I needed to weed before “plot 2” was complete. And now it’s done!! Yippee!! I feel like I’m now making head way with my plots. Now I’ve got to tackle “plot 1” which has become a little on the rustic side. Hopefully tomorrow I can start sorting it out, but it’ll take a good couple of weeks, but I’ll keep you updated on it’s progress.

My Jerusalem Artichoke bed. Apart from tidying the compost heaps, plot 2 is complete.

I was only able to spend the morning on my plots, because I had to somewhere at 1pm, but it the humid heat it wasn’t something that I was going to complain about. It’s supposed to be hotter tomorrow, but I’ll cross that humid bridge when I come to it.

Tuesday 23rd June 2015 – My greenhouse is ready!!

I’ve been up my allotment for most of the day today. I got so much done it was brilliant. So if you’re sitting comfortably then I’ll run through what I managed to get done. Firstly I planted out 8 Sweet Corn plants. These have been growing really well, and are all about 8 inches tall. They need to grow in a block and as I only had 8 plants, that meant that the block was 4 by 2. It’s not a problem because I had a lovely little bed ready for them to go into. Make sure that when you plant them out that you protect them from slugs and snails. Once they get large enough they won’t be bothered by them.

Only 8 Sweetcorn plants this year. Still it's better than nothing. Hopefully I'll get some good corn on the cob....don't forget the tooth picks.

I then planted out my final Pumpkin, I haven’t a clue what variety it is though. All the others when out a couple of weeks ago, but this one was a little too small, so I kept it in the greenhouse for a little longer to see what happened. Now that it’s big enough, it can go outside and play with the rest of the pumpkin plants. I then planted out 6 Red Veined Sorrel plants. I’ve got lots at home in my herb patch, but it grows so beautifully and is a perennial, so comes back year on year. I planted them in the little spaces that I have in the bed where the Globe Artichokes and the Horse Radish are. Hopefully they’ll be happy.

Spot the Red Veined Sorrel, go on, have a go!!

My sister then joined me at the allotment and we put in all the greenhouse glass. It went in very easily, once you figure out which way the little metal things that hold the glass in place go. They can be tricky little buggers, sometimes it’s like being on the Krypton Factor!! But we did it all, so now I can start putting the staging in my new greenhouse and getting the Tomatoes moved down to the allotment. It’s also a good place to shelter if it starts to rain. At least I’ll have some jobs to do, and won’t have to sit swearing in the car like I usually do.

It's all done and ready for some plants to move in.

Once the greenhouse was done, Michelle needed to go, and I stayed for a little longer and  continued with the weeding, watering, feeding and trimming of grass. I have 1 bed left to do and then half of my area is then perfect. I’ll sort out that bed tomorrow. I don’t have as long on my plot tomorrow, about 3 hours hopefully. But I think I’d better go and put together one of the stagings for my greenhouse then I can put it in the car and take it down tomorrow.

Monday 22nd June 2015 – A busy afternoon.

The weather was very “eh!” today, so not suitable for going to the allotment. It kept on raining, and I don’t really like getting THAT wet! So after lots of errands that I had to run this morning (all boring stuff that I’m not going to bore you with), this afternoon was free to dodge the showers and do stuff in the greenhouse. I started with making up 2 more of my staging packs. Now after making the first one, which did take a little while, the subsequent ones were much easer. After these were done, it was time to sort out some of the plants in the greenhouse, and pot them all on into various sized pots. So let me start at the beginning (which is always a good place to start). I potted up 2 Aubergine plants into 6 inch pots. These will stay in these for the rest of their growing life. Soon I’ll attached canes and they can grow up those. Hopefully I’ll get some fruit from these, they’re always a little awkward in the UK weather, but you never know. I then potted on 2 Sweet Peppers, again into 6 inch pots. I’ve only got 2 plants this year out of all the seeds I sowed. I usually do get some peppers, but they tend to be fairly small. But only time will tell. I then potted on 2 Spanish Cucumbers, again into 6 inch pots. If you grow these in a climate similar to Spain, then they can grow outside, but here in the UK they’ll have to stay in the greenhouse. The skins are thicker than our English Cucumbers, so I’ll have to take the skins off before we eat them. Then it was on to the Cucamelons which are in 3 inch pots. I saved one plant from last year. You can do this, as long as you store them in a frost free place. But I also sowed some new seeds, just in case. I now have 7 plants, so hopefully that’ll be enough Cucamelons to last us for a while anyway. When they get bigger they’ll go into 6 inch pots, but I’ll let you know when I do that.Hopefully it’ll be in about 3 weeks time. I then potted up the last of the Basil seedlings. These have been a bit slow to grow. I’m not sure why, but there you go. I didn’t expect them to be this tricky, but there’s obviously something they’re not happy about. I now how 5 plants in total. Hopefully now they’re in their new home they’ll grow well. Then it was the time to pot up the one and only Italian White Sunflower. All the others I potted up into 3 inch pots about 3-4 weeks ago, but the Italian White has been very slow. Still it’s now in a pot all on it’s own, and hopefully it’ll catch up with the others very soon. Then it was time to sort out the Celeriac. I did sow this a little later than I normally do this year, but it seems to have done very well. I picked out 36 plants for myself and put them in 3 inch pots, and then potted up 10 for my sister. The Celeriac did really well in the allotment last year, so hopefully it’ll do well again this year. I then potted up my Chop Suey Greens. Make sure that if you sow these, you don’t sow then too early. They can’t go out until all frost is gone in your area, so sow them about a month before your last frost date, otherwise they’ll get a flower on them before you plant them out and then they’ve gone too far. I potted up into 3 inch pots, 9 pots for me, with 2 plants in each pot and then a couple of plants for my sister. And finally (yes it’s the last one) I potted up some more Sprouting Broccoli. We go through this like no ones business in our household. I’ve potted it up in 3 inch pots, 9 plants for me and about 6 for my sister. What we don’t eat of this, the chickens will, the same goes for Cabbages. The greenhouse is looking good now. I’ve still got one more section of staging to make up for the greenhouse at home, and then it’s the 7 for the greenhouse in the allotment!!

It's filling up nicely!!

It’s filling up nicely!!

And just a little up date on my chickens. I know that lots of you have been asking how they’ve been getting on. Well here’s the latest. They’re still very stupid, but then they’re part of our family so what do you expect. They try and escape their run at any opportunity. They like being held, and peck at my trousers/leggings/shorts when ever they feel like it. But they’re laying eggs between 4-6 a day. They still stay out in the rain and wonder why they get wet, but love lemon sorrel and chase each other when one has a slug or a worm. To get this photo I had to hold some grass above the camera to get them to look up, don’t worry I gave it to them afterwards and they chased each other round their pen trying to take it off each other.

There are 6 chickens, honestly, but Giz is being squashed down the bottom of the picture.

It’s hard to imagine that they’re the same naked birds we got on February 7th this year.

Jaws is 40 and it survived my attempts to remake it…

It still scares the shit out of me, and I’m older than the film…only just though!!

MarkStayWrites's avatarMark Stay Writes

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the release of JAWS, a film that arguably launched the summer blockbuster phenomenon, sent the career of Steven Spielberg into overdrive, and had us all fleeing from the water.

It was such a shocking film that even the headteacher at our school was moved to make it the topic of assembly the morning after a TV screening. And I would join my friends in the playground recollections of the best gory bits.

It was one of a holy trinity of films I would watch on VHS when returning home from school (well, it was preferable to doing my homework), along with Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark (the latter shared a 240 min tape with two-thirds of The Spy Who Loved Me, a movie featuring a different kind of Jaws. The tape ran out just after the Lotus launched itself into the sea…).

At first I was thrilled by…

Thank you soooooo much Marijke. They are amazing!!

They’re mine, all mine!! I need to find some frames that are worthy of these pictures. It’ll be hard to find something suitable, but I’m sure I can. I may have to go to our local frame shop to get something suitable though. But I don’t mind spending a bit more on a frame or two, they’re originals and just so amazingly beautiful. Thank you Marijke, I love them!!

Sunday 21st June 2015 – The first of my new staging is up!!

Woohoo!! It’s all very exciting. You may remember that I mentioned that I ordered a load of new staging from The Greenhouse People when I went to Gardeners’ World just over a week ago. Well today was the day that I started to put the first of it together. You need patience and nimble fingers, and preferably a little helper if there is one available. George offered to help which was great. What I would suggest when putting it together is that you “Finger tighten” all the nuts, and then go round and tighten them all properly once it’s all together. Once it was up it was very sturdy and I moved the first one into my greenhouse. I then got the black trays and placed them in the staging and then moved some (not all because I ran out of room) of my plants into their new trays. I was surprised how many I managed to get in, and how much more space I have now managed to create for my plants. It’s now time to start dinner (Beef Fajitas which Mark has requested, well it was Fathers’ Day), but I’ll continue tomorrow with another staging unit, but already my greenhouse looks so much neater and tidier.

The first of my new greenhouse staging is up. I'm rather impressed with it.

Saturday 20th June 2015 – I need to go to the tip!!

Well the car is full of all my old greenhouse staging. As I was taking it apart, some bits just fell off and other bits are rusted solid. Some of the plastic is so brittle that when you touch it, it just crumbles. The wooden staging that I made years and years ago is going rotten in various places and to get it all in the car for only one trip to the tip (try saying that when you’ve had a drink) I had to saw some of it up. It was quicker that getting the screw driver out and trying to undo rusty screws. So the greenhouse is now empty apart from my plants. Once you take out the staging, you realise how large your greenhouse actually is. It’s 6 foot square, but seems smaller when the staging is in there. All my plants are sitting on the floor waiting for their new staging to be constructed. Hopefully I can get some of it done tomorrow afternoon. I hope it’s easy to construct, but I’m sure I can cope even if it’s a little tricky. As I cleared out the greenhouse I panicked a spider that didn’t know where to go. I hope it’s found a little hidey hole. I’ll do the tip trip tomorrow morning first thing and then put the car back to normal because we have to go out later in the morning. At the moment the only person who can fit in the car is the driver. It’s now pouring with rain, so I managed to get everything in the car just in time. I think I’ve earned my glass of wine (not had any alcohol for about 2 weeks which is rather odd). I’ll let you know how the new staging goes, and take photos to show you. Well that’s it for today. Dinner will be ready soon….oh my goodness it’s really hammering it down with rain!! I expect the chickens are still out playing, they should go in when it rains, but haven’t figured that out yet!!
