My New Toy!!

I’ve just ordered myself a new toy and soon I’ll get 6 little toys to go inside. Hopefully those 6 little toys will lay lots of eggs for us. Thank you to Gardens 4 Less for having the perfect home for my new chickens!!! I hope they enjoy your “Superior Mosley Freestanding Coop and Run”. I’ll keep you posted on how they get on. Just got to hunt down some ex battery hens to save, and give them a happy life. Many years I got my Butt Pump from Gardens 4 Less and they were brilliant. Anyone know who sells ex battery hens in Surrey?

International Kiss a Ginger day 2015!!

Yes it does actually exist! International Kiss a Ginger day is now in it’s 6th year. Now I’m not suggesting that you all go out and find someone with red hair and kiss them. They may take offence to this, and you might get arrested. But if you do know someone with red hair (and it must be naturally red, not out of a bottle), then if you would like to, please go and give them a kiss on this our special day. Do ask them first obviously. We are a dying breed, so make sure you make the most of us while we’re still here. According to scientific studies, red represents: intensity, heat, passion and sexuality. Whether that’s try, you’ll have to ask someone who’s other half is a red head. Oh, and we know if you’re a natural red head or not, we have a sixth sense for that sort of thing. Have fun xxxx

Claire and her hats!

You may remember me mentioning that when the rest of the family were on scary rides I went shopping. Well, I decided to try on as many interesting hats as possible and thought I would share them all with you.

Firstly from The Muppet Show, here is my favourite drummer Animal.

Drums!!! Drums!!!

Drums!!! Drums!!!

And when Mark and the kids were having fun on the Star Tours ride, I found a friendly Wampa hat.

A Wampa! Mind he doesn't eat you.

A Wampa! Mind he doesn’t eat you.

And a bad ass Sith Lord, Darth Maul.

Ray Park eat your heart out.

And everyones favourite walking carpet Chewbacca.

"Punch it Chewy!"

And finally with Star Wars, the cutest little teddy bears ever, the Ewoks.

Goopa! Which is Hello is Ewokese.....I really need help.

Here are a couple more Muppets, firstly Beaker, who puts up with a lot from Dr Bunsen Honeydew.

Me me me, me me me!

Me me me, me me me me!

And where would we be without Sweetums, who looks scary, but really isn’t.

Bean Bunny run away!!

Bean Bunny run away!!

And finally when Mark and the kids were on the Expedition Everest ride, I found this Abominable Snowman hat. Although I’m sure he looks a lot scarier in real life.

Don't eat the yellow snow!!

Don’t eat the yellow snow!!

I didn’t buy any of these hats, although I was tempted. I did however by myself a new allotment cap, which you’ll see me wearing when I get back down the allotment and the sun is shining.

Orlando day 11 – 31st December – Crazy Golf and home.

After a relaxed breakfast, knowing that we didn’t have a bus to catch, Mark and I went to pack, while the kids went in the hotel pool. You had to be 12 and over to swim in the pool without a parent, which is great because George is 12 and Emily is 15. Emily didn’t go in the pool, but sat on a sun lounger and did stuff on the ipad. George however was playing in the pool for over an hour, and was all wrinkly like and old man when he came out. They can both swim very well, having learnt in my parents pool. George is far more confident, and can dive. So Mark and I packed all our bits up. We had 2 cases full of dirty laundry, 1 case of gifts and another case of a few clean clothes and various other bits. It was all very organised as I then knew where everything was. Our maid for the time that we were staying at the hotel had been brilliant, and had always arranged the kids toys in different ways on their beds. She also made the loo roll into either a rose or a bow. We tipped her every day and gave her a little extra on Christmas day and on our last day and wrote her a thank you letter. We had to be out of our room by 11am, but the taxi wasn’t going to be picking us up until 1.30pm. So we had to find something to do. Just down the road was Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf, so we went there to play.

Let's go play some craaazy golf!!

Let’s go play some craaazy golf!!

There were 18 holes on the course, and I’ve played crazy golf a couple of times before, and the kids and Mark have played more, but usually the boys come 1st and 2nd and then us girls come 3rd and 4th. We all had a great time golfing away. Some holes were a little harder than others. George was the only one to get a hole in one, and I missed getting one by a sliver.

Par, Bogie, Birdie!!

Par, Bogie, Birdie!!

When we’d finished I added up the scores and they were as follows: 4th Emily with 77, 3rd Mark with 66, 2nd George with 58 and 1st ME with 54. I’ve never won before, and I was very excited. If you got Par on all the holes you should have done it in 43. George checked my adding up just incase I got it wrong, but I hadn’t. We then wandered into Old Town to have some lunch and a last look around before the taxi came and we went to the airport to come home. The flight back was brilliant, although it’s rather difficult to sleep in a plane. We took off just after 6pm Orlando time, and at 7pm it was announced that it was midnight in the UK, so we all did the countdown and everyone wished each other a HAPPY NEW YEAR and we all cheered. We landed at Gatwick just after 6.30am and by the time we’d collected out suitcase, found the car, and driven home it was 8am. After we’d opened our Christmas presents, we didn’t do much for the rest of the day, basically watched TV and had a few things to eat. We all then went to bed at 7.30pm. What a Christmas and New Year, very exhausting, but a huge amount of fun.

Orlando day 10 – 30th December – Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Well it’s our last full day today so we went off to see what we could see at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The day was very overcast as we left the hotel on the bus, but I insisted that we take our waterproofs with us. Good thing I did, because not long after we arrived at the park, the heavens opened. Quite appropriate really for being in the jungle. After a couple of minutes of rain, I suddenly realised that my waterproof was no longer waterproof, and I was getting wet in all sorts of embarrassing places.

4 wild beasts....grrrr!

4 wild beasts….grrrr!

Our first port of call was the Kilimanjaro Safari, which was totally brilliant. You get driven round in a Jeep, and get to see loads of different animals from elephants, to rhinos, to giraffes, warthogs and emus. Our guide was fantastic and pointed out all the animals for us.

We saw black and white rhinos.

We saw black and white rhinos.

When we had finished our safari ride we then did the Pangani Forest Exploration. This time some of it was inside where you saw all sorts of reptiles, some very ugly naked mole rats (I’m sorry but they aren’t very pretty), a very large toad and a tortoise, (although the lady behind me told her daughter that it was a turtle). If felt like reminding her that turtles spend a huge amount of their time in the sea, and tortoises live on land and don’t go near the sea. Still never mind!!

What a lovely pair of TORTOISES!!

What a lovely pair of TORTOISES!!

We also saw a huge tank that had masses of fish in, and some hippos. As I watched the fish swim about, suddenly right in front of my eyes floated past a hippo as graceful as anything. The fish didn’t mind one bit, but I’ve never seen that before, and they’re so lumbering on the land. We also saw some zebras and some adorable meerkats, that kept popping up out of the ground. We also saw a silver backed gorilla, which was a little on the moody side. He’s most probably fed up with people staring at him all day. Then it was time to get wet again. So we went on the Kali River Rapids. Now I’m very glad I went on this, as it sounds worse than it is. There are a few gentle drops, some gentle spinning, and lots and lots of getting wet. Make sure you put your feet up on the bar, otherwise your shoes will get soaked. It’s a very short ride, and I would have gone on again if the queue wasn’t quite that long. After looking at some more animals and drying off we then came across the tigers. George got out the camera again and was fascinated with the tigers behind the glass. He took some amazing pictures.

They are so beautiful, but I wouldn't want to get too close.

They are so beautiful, but I wouldn’t want to get too close.

Then Mark and the kids went on Expedition Everest!! This clearly wasn’t for me, so I waited by the photo point so I could see them whizzing past. We had 4 fast passes for this, but they only used 3. Well, this isn’t for the faint hearted because at one point you stop in the dark, and then go backwards!!! Apparently you are at such an angle that you feel like you’re upside down, but aren’t!! Sounds like hell to me. They all enjoyed it, but George wanted to go on again. He got through very quickly as he was on his own. Mark, Emily and I waited to see him. Then having done it twice he wanted to do it yet again!!! So he used my Fast Pass to get through. I think he would have gone on it all afternoon if we’d let him. I was then convinced to go on Dinosaur. You go back in time to rescue an Iguanodon. I was rather apprehensive about this, nothing to do with the loud noises, or scary dinosaurs, but the violent way the Jeep would be moving about. You had a seat belt on, and a bar in front to hold onto. I kept one hand on the bar and the other was holding Mark’s hand very tightly. During the ride, Mark asked if he could have his hand back, and very quickly I replied “NO!”. We had to prise our hands apart when the ride had finished. This ride was rather out of my comfort zone, and I WILL NOT be doing that again. We ended the day with “It’s Tough Being and Bug”, which is based around the film “A Bug’s Life”. You sit in a theatre and watched a 3D show, which was very good, but some parts were very scary, and 1 child had to be taken outside because she got scared. We then headed back to get the bus back to the hotel, all very exhausted. Oh and I met Russell from “UP”, lovely chap.

Where's his Ellie badge?

Orlando day 9 – 29th December – Epcot and Magic Kingdom

Every time I write the titles for these, in my head it sounds like the voice from the Big Brother house….”Orlando, day 9….”. But obviously this is much more interesting than anything that goes on in the Big Brother House. Today we spent the morning at Epcot to do a few things and then the afternoon we were going to the Magic Kingdom to do the same. So it should be a more relaxed sort of day. We had Fast Passes booked for Space Ship Earth. Make sure you have fast passes because the queues are really, really long. This was a sweet little ride where it took you through the history of communication on this planet from the stone age to present day. I sat next to Emily and there were 2 of you to a little pod. There were no seat belts or pull down straps so I was quite happy with this. Still it was very dark in places, and you do go up quite a way, which made me a little nervous, so I held onto Emily’s hand for a bit of reassurance. Then at the very end of the ride your pod moves round 180 degrees and you go down backwards which worried me a little to start with, but it was very slow so that was ok. George decided that he needed to wash his face in the park, so he used some water from the parks car wash.

Don't ask! But apparently it was very refreshing!

Don’t ask! But apparently it was very refreshing!

We then took the monorail to The Magic Kingdom. We were told that it was near capacity so to be aware of that. It was heaving, but again you could find little quiet pockets. We took the Liberty Square Riverboat around the park which was very pleasant. And then we had the largest, small ice cream I have every seen. I had no added sugar Butter Pecan, which was amazing. I dread to think what a large one is like! I think Mark had Raspberry Sorbet and I can’t remember what the kids had, but I’m sure it had chocolate in it. We all ate them, but then felt very full for quite a while.

It's only a small, honestly.

It’s only a small, honestly.

Emily had her photo taken with Merida from Brave, so she was very happy.

I don't think she was a natural red head. We can tell you know.

I don’t think she was a natural red head. We can tell you know.

We also took the Walt Disney World Railroad round the park which was great fun and saw all sorts of interesting views. To be honest it was great to have a sit down. The Magic Kingdom may be the happiest place on earth, but it’s also very knackering. Later we met up with Sally and Sarah and went back to their lovely home to have dinner. They’d made Spaghetti Bolognese which was wonderful. It was so nice to have a dinner that didn’t contain chips!!

Orlando day 8 – 28th December – Disney Hollywood Studios.

Out of all the parks, Disney Hollywood Studios was the most bizarrely set out. It was very good, don’t get me wrong, but just didn’t seemed to be as organised as the other parks. Still we had a great day. We got the boat from Epcot, which took about 20-30 minutes, and took you past all the hotels on the Disney complex. I know that they’re more expensive, but you’re right in the centre of the parks and the transport to and from each park is very frequent. The hotel that we stayed in had 3 buses in the morning and then 3 in the evening, where as if you wanted to go to Universal there was 1 in the morning at 7.45am and then 1 back at 6.30. If you wanted to stay to watch the fireworks, then you would have to get a cab back to your hotel which would have cost $40. If we go again, we’ll stay in one of the the parks hotels. We arrived ready for another busy day.

It's us again!!

It’s us again!!

The first show we saw was Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular. It was like watching a movie being shot. Having seen movies being shot several times (I’ve been an extra in several films, including Robot Overlords), it was great to see big explosions, and all the well known stunts that you expect. The show lasted for about 40 minutes, and was very well done. Mark and the kids then went on the Star Tours ride. Again this was not suitable for me, so I went shopping and found some very interesting Muppets mugs. I’ve been a fan of the Muppets since I first saw them when I was very little, so I was very happy and bought myself a new mug.

It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights, it time to make some tea on the Muppet show tonight!

It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights, it time to make some tea on the Muppet show tonight!

While they were enjoying their scary ride, I also enjoyed trying on various winter hats. I will do an entire blog about all the hats I found. Like George having to take a sip at all the water fountains in the parks, I had to try on all the hats. We all have to have our  strange thing. Oh and talking about strange things, can anyone shine a light on the turkey leg phenomenon? They had them at all the parks, and people were eating them all day long. I know it’s Christmas, but I can’t help thinking about all those turkey’s hobbling round on crutches. Anyway, we then all met up and went to see a car chase show called “Lights, Motors, Action!”. Again it was like the Indiana Jones show, as it was like watching a movie being filmed. Some excellent driving, and to be honest a bit like the Sunday driving around where we live.

Broom, Broom, Screech!!

Broom, Broom, Screech!!

We then saw the Muppet Vision 3D, which was brilliant, The Great Movie Ride, George met the green soldier from Toy Story, and both Emily and George had their photo taken with Phineas and Ferb.

What ya doin'?

What ya doin’?

Oh, and we finally found some green apples for George. He loves Granny Smith apples, and has been 8 days without one. We found 3 and bought them all. As he ate his first one he was like a baby who’s just had a full bottle, very satisfied. Oh and he ate the other 2 apples a bit later on in the day. When we’d done all we wanted to, we got the boat back to Epcot and got Fish and Chips from the English area in the World Showcase, and sat by the lake to eat it. Before we caught the bus back to our hotel, we heard a band playing, so we went to investigate. They played some well know Rock and Roll numbers, and loads of people were dancing away. George went for a wander and came back saying Pooh and Tigger were about. So we went to see, and the kids and I had our photo taken with them both.

You never get too old to have your photo taken with these two.

You never get too old to have your photo taken with these two.

Orlando day 7 – 27th December – Kennedy Space Centre

Now I know that rockets are big, but until you stand underneath one, you can never really imagine just how big they really are. There was a huge amount of wondering “Are they really THAT large?” going on today. We started the day very, very early as we were being picked up by our taxi at 7.15am, to take us to our meeting point “The Big Orange”. And yes it was a big orange, or half of it, otherwise it would be rolling all over the place. It was a shop that only sold citrus fruit. I wondered if I should go in and ask if they had any apples. Anyway, our coach finally arrived and picked a little group of us up, then went onto several more pick up points. The coach was full, and then we had an hours drive to The Kennedy Space Centre. When we arrived we took a quick family selfie before we went into meet an actual real life astronaut Sam Gemar.

5...4...3...2...1...Blast off!!

5…4…3…2…1…Blast off!!

After his little talk, which was very interesting, (but I was secretly hoping for Buzz Lightyear to come out), we then went wandering round Kennedy on our own. We had to be back on the coach at 5pm, so we had plenty of time. We got to see the Atlantis Shuttle, which was amazing, and again HUGE!! There is was suspended from the ceiling in all it’s glory. It was so big that trying to get a photo of the whole thing was rather tricky. All I can say is thank goodness for the “Pano” setting on my phone. The kids got to have a go at sitting in a replica cockpit, and climbing through some tunnels. I tried it to but wished I had knee pads on as the plastic tubing was rather hard on the old knees.

I can do it to. Maybe with a few more grunts and groans than the kids.

I can do it to. Maybe with a few more grunts and groans than the kids.

We also saw the Saturn V rocket, which they had separated into pieces so you could see all the wiring between each stage, which was superb. It was hanging in a massive hanger, which had to be very, very long. They also had all the flags from each mission hanging up. They’re all different, but make sure you know your roman numerals, otherwise you won’t know which missions they came from. We then took a bus out to the launching site. This was a very iconic place. Even seeing the backs of the seating stands is something to behold. You can sit in them, and 3-4 miles away are the launch pads. You can just imagine what the atmosphere would be like when a rocket takes off.

Look carefully. One launch pad is on the left, and one is on the right.

Look carefully. One launch pad is on the left, and one is on the right.

George was told that there were between 5,000 to 6,000 alligators on the waters around Florida, and he was determined to see one. He spent ages walking up and down the fencing looking in the water, until finally he came running over to us shouting “I’ve found one!!” We all rushed over, expecting it to have either gone, or being very small, and it was neither. In fact it was about 5 foot long!! He was very proud and took the picture of the holiday with our camera.

An alligator in all it's glory.

An alligator in all it’s glory.

We saw so many different rockets, all to scale, so massive and huge. The lovely simple memorial of those astronauts who died during space missions. This was beautifully done, so simple and elegant. And if you were brave enough you can go in the Shuttle Launch Experience. If you’re not brave enough, then you can just watch. I was very apprehensive about this, but did pluck up enough courage to do it. Although I was slightly regretting this during the experience. But there was a timer on the wall, and I could watch the count down which helped me immensely. The ride lasts for 4 minutes, but seems much longer. You’re strapped in (which is never a good sign), and then tipped back so you’re lying on your back with your legs up. You then shake violently for several seconds, and then you blast off into space. The noise is phenomenal, and apparently like a real launch. After a couple more minutes of violent shaking the engines finally stop and you then very slowly tip forward. They open up the ceiling and you can see moving stars. Then slowly you tip back to normal, and that’s it!! I was told that is was like a rough plane decent, but I would question that. I’ve descended during a storm, and that was much calmer. Still I did it, but it was not in my comfort zone. Just before the end of the day we managed to squeeze in another family photo, this time with as many rockets behind us as we could. I’m not sure why Mark suddenly decided to grow a rocket out of his head, but hey ho.

Sometimes pictures just turn out this way.

Sometimes pictures just turn out this way.

Orlando day 6 – 26th December – Universal Parks

We classed the next 2 days as “Catch up days”. This was just incase we’d not done everything in the parks we’d wanted to. So we spent the morning at the Islands of Adventure. I was feeling rather brave, so told Mark and the kids that’s I would go on the Jurassic Park River Adventure. I’d taken photos of Mark and the kids going on this ride several times. You heard a massive scream and then a couple of seconds later a boat appeared and everyone got soaked. When we arrived at the park that morning, there was hardly anyone around, and we didn’t have to queue and got straight on a boat. I sat next to Mark, holding on very tightly to the bar in front. I had been warned that when you see the T-Rex then you drop. Oh, and the drop is 85 feet!! So we started going up a little ramp which already made me feel a little uneasy, then we dropped a couple of feet and gently floated past various dinosaurs. I was beginning to think the kids had made it all up just to frighten me. You then enter the Raptor area, and that is when it starts to go very wrong. You start to go up and up and up and up!! It goes dark and then there it is, the T-Rex head!! Oh, holy moly mother of God!! I swore all the way down. And before I could process what I’d done I was on the boat again!! How did that happen? I’m not sure if knowing what is going to happen is good or bad. But after doing it twice I was shaking enough and didn’t want to do it EVER AGAIN!! Don’t tell Mark and the kids, but I’m glad I did it…sshhh!

Just a little bit wet!

Just a little bit wet!

Mark and George them went on another wet ride and Emily and I watched them get even wetter. We then went to the Poseidon’s Fury show which was great fun. George got picked to help the man in charge, which he did with gusto. Then to readdress the balance we went on the High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train. This was really meant for kids, but delicate little flowers like me too. Mark and the kids then went on the Flight of the Hippogriff Ride and I went shopping. We then took the Hogwarts Express to London or Universal Studios if you prefer. The journey takes about 5-10 minutes and is brilliant. Once at Universal we went to a Horror Make up Show, the Shrek show, the E.T Adventure, which wasn’t as bad as I’d been told. Although I hope that Steven Spielberg never does a film about E.T’s home planet. We then jumped back on the Hogwarts Express to take us back to where we need to catch our bus back to the hotel. Oh, and I had my picture take with Squidward from Sponge Bob Square Pants.

Smile, you're in Florida!!

Orlando day 5 – Christmas Day – Epcot

This has to be one of the weirdest Christmas days I have ever had. Weird, but very, very enjoyable. Because we were going away for Christmas we decided that we wouldn’t buy any presents for each other, so apart from getting each other cards that would be it. We didn’t take any presents with us and left any safely under the tree at home. So today we spent the day at Disney’s Epcot, or the “Big Golf Ball” as we liked to call it.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!! We really should have party hats on.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!! We really should have party hats on.

We started by going to the far end of the park to the World Showcase, which shows you various countries, in very stereotypical ways. In the English section there were quaint cottages, a red phone box and post box, a very small replica of Hampton Court Palace, that was actually the loos. They really should have called them “Lavatories”, but instead they called them “Restrooms”. Mark accused me on trying to confuse the Americans by insisting on calling them “Loos”, but you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. And cobbled streets and a perfect green area. None of these you would find where we live, but in various parts of England, yes you would. Loads of people were having their photo taken in the phone box and by the post box. We were asked if we wanted our photo taken by these, but we politely declined. We see them everyday!! There were 11 countries to explore which was great fun. They also had traditional food for each country available, so it was great to try new cuisines.

The whole of England looks like this....apparently.

The whole of England looks like this….apparently.

After lunch Mark and the kids went on two very scary rides Mission Space, and Soarin. And off I went to Behind the Seeds, which allows you to go back stage in the park and see how they grow all the plants they need. It was fascinating, and I’ve got a great idea for trying to grow some seeds using hydroponics. I’ll keep you updated with this when I do it. We were introduced to the hottest chilli pepper ever, which is called the “Carolina Reaper”. This is 100 times hotter than the Ghost Chilli. So I won’t be growing them any time soon. If you want to grow some, please, be my guest.

Feelin' hot hot hot!!

Feelin’ hot hot hot!!

We then finally met up again, and I had an appointment with someone just like me. Now it’s not just the kids that like to have their photos taken with their favourite characters, us grown ups do as well. This is not frowned upon at all, and when you have your photo taken with whoever you like, they talk to you and spend time with you. All the photos you take are free, and you’re not rushed through. So we hurried back to the England area at Epcot, and I stood in line to have my picture taken with someone who’s practically perfect in every way.

"Oh it's a jolly holiday with Mary..."

“Oh it’s a jolly holiday with Mary…”

It was then time for our dinner reservations. We had booked at Tokyo Dining, as the kids insisted we had sushi. Now I’m not very good with chop sticks, so I had to opt for the knife and fork option. Still it was a lovely meal, very filling and we took home what we couldn’t eat, so we could have it another time. It was odd not to have turkey and all the trimmings, but lovely to not have to do any of the washing up. We had a gentle stroll back to the bus to take us back to our hotel. And then fell fast asleep.
