Tuesday 15th July 2014 – Pumpkins are very happy.

I’ve not seen my allotment for several days now because of various things (work, a busy weekend, and a poorly hubby), and I think it missed me. I missed it. Still I’m please to report that it’s been behaving itself well, and all the plants, even the weeds, are growing well. I started back at the beginning again today weeding and watering, and managed to do just over a quarter of my area, so that was good. The Pumpkins are growing very well.

When I first planted them out, my they've grown!!

When I first planted them out, my they’ve grown!!

They seem to have really taken over the bed that I planted them in, which is exactly what I wanted them to do. I have loads of little Pumpkins growing, some the size of golf balls, and others the size of a grapefruit. Keep growing my babies and give me a huge massive one this year.

I know that size isn't everything, but it is when it comes to Pumpkins!!

I know that size isn’t everything, but it is when it comes to Pumpkins!!

It’s getting very humid at the moment and it’s supposed to get more humid and hotter as the week goes on. Apparently we may hit 30 by Friday!! Then it’ll all end with bangs and crashes as storms move across the UK. This usually happens, but it’s a good thing, we’ve not had a good storm for ages. At temperatures like this you can’t stay down the allotment for long or do anything too strenuous, and loads of water, sun cream and a hat is needed. Some of my potatoes are ready to come up in about a weeks time, so I’ll dig them up as and when we need them. Also I think I need to pick some more Rhubarb tomorrow, I’m sure I’ll find some takers for it at bell ringing, as I’ve still got some in the freezer from last year.

Rhubarb is doing well.

Rhubarb is doing well.

Well that’s it’s for today, just got to water the garden with last nights bath water and then maybe a potter to do some dead heading. Oh, and just incase you’re wondering, Mark is now better, but not completely recovered. I think it was some sort of virus, it put him out for a couple of days poor chap. I hope I don’t get it, I’ve got a very busy weekend (no surprise there).

Sunday 13th July 2014 – Box Hill is a long, long climb!!

Now if you add up what I walked today, which is from home to bell ringing, bell ringing to Polesden Lacey, Polesden Lacey to Box Hill view point and then finally from Box Hill back home, it all adds up to an astonishing 22.5 miles!!! I had a loo break at Polesden Lacey, and then sat down for 5 minutes when I got up the top of Box hill, to have a look at the view, which I think I was entitled to. Well I think you would have a sit down after you’d just walked all the way up Box Hill, as it’s rather steep and a very long way. I also had to stop halfway up to get my water bottle out and take a well earned swig of water, and then I continued on and on and on. I used the bridal path as it was safer than the road. However, the road  would have been easier on my little legs to walk up, but there are too many cars, and hair pin bends to make walking up the Zig Zag safe. I’m not sure if I’ll be walking up it again, as I know what’s in store for me on my way up. The path seemed endless, until finally I spotted Box Hill Fort and knew that the end was in sight. That was a good cardiovascular work out though. At least the walk down was all down hill so that’s the silver lining to walking up a hill. I think that I’ll drive up next time, it’s much easier. Needless to say I was a bit cream crackered when I got home. So I had a shower, put on my pj’s and had a well earned cup of tea and a sit down. Now where to next time?

I’ve finally seen those fabulous Robot Overlords!!

Last night (Thursday 10th July 2014) the kids and I went up to London to meet Mark from work and then go and see a preview screening of Robot Overlords. Last time they had a screening, George and I couldn’t make it, but this time we all got there. The screening was at the Bafta screening room off Piccadilly, which was very posh and air conditioned. Lovely comfortable seats, and no one kicking you from behind. When Emily saw the previous screening her review was “SUPER FREAKING AWESOME!!!” And quite rightly so. It was amazing to see Mark’s name at the beginning come up on screen in huge letter (that’s my husband I wanted to tell everyone), a little lump came to throat. And then the film started. I’m not going to give anything away, but the excitement, the tension, the drama, I could go on, but I want you to experience those feeling when you go and see it. My review “SUPER DUPER FREAKING AWESOME AND MORE!!!!” A massive hug to everyone who put their faith in it. You’ve done the British Film industry so proud, it looks just as polished as those blockbuster with a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars where they did it at a fraction of the price.

Thursday 10th July 2014 – All my tomatoes are finally in!!

I spent this morning at home potting up the rest of my tomatoes into 6 inch pots.

Some on the patio up against our new fencing.

Some on the patio up against our new fencing.

I’ve had to move various plant pots around, and put many of them out in the front garden just to make room for my tomatoes.

Some more tomatoes on one side of the greenhouse.

Some more tomatoes on one side of the greenhouse.

But I have finally got all of my tomato plants into their final pots. I don’t know how many I have, but it’s a lot!!

Some on the other side of the greenhouse.

Some on the other side of the greenhouse.

Hopefully that’ll mean loads of wonderful tomatoes over the summer months.

These ones are on the patio, underneath the kitchen window sill.

Now I’ve just got to tidy the garden table as I’ve made a bit of a mess on it. I’ll do that tomorrow.

Wednesday 9th July 2014 – I’ve started to sort out the fruit patch.

The fruit patch that I created several years ago has been a bit neglected over the past couple of years. It’s been very low down on my list of priorities, which I know is not right. But now that all the beds are sorted and everything is growing really well. I can now put all my concentration into finally getting to grips with it, and sorting it out before the autumn sets in. The soil is fairly compact which is a bit of a problem, so it has to be loosened with the big fork, then the weeds and couch grass roots have to be taken out by using my little trowel. It’s a slow laborious process, but it seems to be working well. I also harvested the first of my Sugar Snap Peas, and Climbing French Beans, so we’ll have a mixture of those for dinner tonight. We had quite a lot of rain yesterday as well as some thunder that rattled around for about and hours. It was nothing major with only a few flashes of lightning, but some of the rumbles were quite sizeable. So even though I only got a couple of hours at the allotment today, I managed to get quite a bit done. Hopefully tomorrow will be good then I can carry on. Only the weather will decide that one (be dry….please!!)

Monday 7th July 2014 – Rain rain go away come back another day (like tomorrow morning when I’m working)

According to the weather forecast this morning we weren’t supposed to get rain showers until this afternoon. Clearly the weather wasn’t listening to Carol Kirkwood. There I was minding my own business up the allotment this morning when a few spots decided to fall. Now this was ok, it went and the sun came out again. Then a little later it absolutely poured. Firstly I hid underneath my neighbours tree, and was then joined by another plot holder, but then the rain got even heavier, so we went and sat in my car until it had stopped. Finally we were able to leave the dryness of the car and return to our plots, which were a little wetter than when we’d left them. Still I managed to weed the last 2 beds, pick some peas, have a good sort out of the Jerusalem Artichoke bed and put some manure on it, and then begin the job of sorting out the fruit bed. This I nearly finished, but the clouds gathered again, so I decided to quit whilst I was ahead. Lucky I did as not long after I got home it rained again. You can pour tomorrow morning when I’m working, but when I plan to go to the allotment, I’d prefer the sun to be out. Thank you xx

Sunday 6th July 2014 – I didn’t like that gate stile.

Now I have nothing against them per say, but when you’ve been walking for 17 miles and then have to go over one, it can be rather tricky. I was continuing my training today for my walk in September, and today I needed to walk for around 17 miles. Google Maps is brilliant in that respect. I’ve now changed from walking for a certain time, to walking a certain amount of miles. I’m gradually getting to my goal of 26.2, but I’m not there yet. Hopefully it won’t be too long, then I’ll have a rough idea of how long it’ll take me on the night. So today after bell ringing I walked to Shalford Mill. A very pretty place and for me the perfect distance. Mark and the kids met me there, but they arrived earlier than I did. So they looked round the mill while I walked the final part. This time I was off road for some of it, which for me was a little scary as I’m used to walking on the roads (paths really, but you know what I mean). This time it was across some fields, with some wonderful views of Guildford, and of Guildford Cathedral on it’s hill. Then as I was approaching the last hurdle (so to speak) I came across a stile. Now I usually hop over these without any problem. If there had been a gate I’d have used that instead. But there was only the stile. Now you try going over one when you’ve walked as far as I’d just done. Believe me it’s not very easy. I was like a little old lady. I sounded like the women tennis players as I grunted my way over. My legs were saying “WHAT ARE YOU DOING WOMAN?” But I’m pleased to say I did make it over without falling flat on my face and across the field dreading that there would be another one on the other side, but thank goodness there was a gate! Phew!! When I arrived at Shalford Mill, Mark and the kids were inside having a look around, so I sat on the grass by a brick wall and rested my tired feet and legs. It was then home and then I had some more bell ringing to do later in the evening. I think I’ll sleep well tonight.
