Thursday 30th July 2015 – A morning of harvesting and planting out.

I was hoping to have a couple of hours on the allotment this morning working. Well I had a couple of hours, but only worked for just over and hour. I ended up spending the rest of the time chatting with a fellow plot holder about various things, but nothing to do with plants and gardening which was rather odd. Anyway, it was great to chat with him. I did however manage to harvest all of my Kohl Rabi. In fact there were 21 of them! I’ve already harvested some, and they’ve done really well this year, I’m very pleased with them. Now all I need to do is to peel them and then cut them into chunks and freeze them. When we have a casserole then I’ll put some in.

There are 21 Kohl Rabi here. All a very, very good size.

Once this bed was emptied, I then removed the few weeds that were about and then planted out my Celeriac. This was sown a little on the late side, but has caught up well in the greenhouse and in their individual 3 inch pots. Some were still on the small side, but some aren’t doing too badly. I don’t think they’ll be huge as celeriac goes, but as long as the bulb swells up fairly well I won’t mind. They won’t need harvesting until the end of autumn so they’ve still got time.

Celeriac behind where I would expect them to be, but hopefully they'll soon catch up.

Then just before I left (I had promised the kids I’d be home for lunch), I harvested some more Potatoes and a few more French Beans. Some of the Potatoes are ready to come up, but others aren’t quite there. Which is fine by me, as then I can harvest as and when we need them. The French Beans are just starting to fruit. I’ve got loads of flowers, so give it a couple more weeks and then I’ll have more than I know what to do with.

Potatoes from just a couple of plants. That's enough for several dinners for us lot.

Well that’s it for today. George is swimming this afternoon and Emily and I are making cakes and stuff. See you tomorrow hopefully.

Wednesday 29th July 2015 – Hatchlands Park.

Today the kids and I went to another National Trust place, well when you’re a member you don’t want to waste your membership do you, that’s just silly. We ticked another place off our list today and visited Hatchlands Park in West Horsley. A very pleasant drive and not that far away from where we live. We left home at just after 10.30am and arrived around 11.15am. There are 3 different walks that you can take round the estate, red which is 1.4km, blue which is 2km or the yellow which is 4km. We opted for the yellow and so off we went. First of all we came into a field that had lots of black and brown cows in. Now cows are rather stupid, and when I was young I helped get some in for milking and they panic at the slightest thing. Even though people are walking through their field all day long, they don’t like you getting too close and back away if you do. We left them to eat their grass and moo to themselves. We then came to a large pond called “Sheepwash Pond”. Not sure if it would really be a good idea to wash sheep in it, but the ducks seemed to be having fun. There were some wonderful willow trees around the edges of the pond, and the kids enjoyed climbing on them. I’m pleased to say that none of us fell in the water….even George which is a miracle!! We then continued on the yellow trail when Emily found a very unfortunate beetle. How long he’d been in this predicament we have no idea, but he wasn’t moving and was long gone. I know it sounds horrible, but we looked at it for ages in amazement.

Poor little bugger. Managed to fly straight into some barbed wire and impale himself right in his neck.

Poor little bugger. Managed to fly straight into some barbed wire and impale himself right in his neck.

It was at this point that we got lost. We had a map, but instead of continuing straight ahead, we turned right, and didn’t know where we were. But we soon found out and realised that we’d missed the entire top section off. Never mind. Next we came across the “Great Wix Wood” and inside the wood was the “Wizard Wix’s Willow Warren”. You try saying that several times fast, George tried and it went very wrong. Inside the warren it was very dark and spooky. Emily (know loves horror movies) kept telling us that people got murdered in places like this!! What a charming daughter I have. Fortunately we all made it out alive, but the kids had fun playing in the various hidey holes and structures.

You're never too old to play in a make shift shelter.

You’re never too old to play in a make shift shelter.

After this it was time for lunch, and we found a lovely little picnic area. We’d bought our own lunch of sandwiches, crisps, cake, fruit, little cheeses and drink. After all our walking we were all very hungry. Once we’d eaten we then rejoined the yellow trail and walked through the Little Wix Wood, where we saw lots of fairy doors. We then continued on our walk, following the yellow trail and found the “Sylvanian Families Nature Trail”, where there were lots of little questions about nature (we managed to get them all right) and several carvings of Sylvanian Family members made from tree stumps.

There were 3 carvings of various characters. I don't think we missed any.

Then it was the final part of the yellow route towards the house. We saw the “Ice House” and then it was onto “The Temple”. Then we all got to have a play on some space hoppers. George didn’t need any encouragement to have a go. Oh my goodness that boy can bounce high on one!! He must have bounced about 18 inches!! Out of all the children bouncing on them my 2 were the eldest, but who cares, they were put there to be bounced on my anyone of any age.

If you look carefully you can see the shadow of his space hopper. A great action shot!!

If you look carefully you can see the shadow of his space hopper!!

Emily needed a little more encouragement, but soon got the hang of it. Even though she didn’t bounce as high as George did, she still had loads of fun.

You can see the little girl in her still trying to get out.

You can see the little girl in her still trying to get out.

Then it was my turn. I’ve not been on a space hopper for….well I have no idea. As I was about to get on I looked around to make sure no one was watching and saw an elderly lady in a wheel chair was smiling at me. I had a bounce, but that picture has already been blogged so I won’t embarrass myself again by putting it up once more. Then it was time to look round the house. They have over 40 pianos on the ground floor alone! You can only play one at a time. All were beautiful and belonged to various composers and important people. After looking in the house we went to the courtyard and looked in the Old Stable, and there was a little secret garden that I found. So had a few other people, so I didn’t stay long and left them in peace. Finally it was a trip to the cafe for an ice cream for the kids and a tea for me. Lovely so see that they give you a decent sized cup (more a mug size really) which was brilliant.

A well deserved ice cream.

A well deserved ice cream.

We then drove home and returned around 3pm. A lovely day, thank you Hatchlands Park, we’ll come again.

Friday 24th July 2015 – Another load of s**t!!

It takes 2 trailer loads of manure to cover all the beds on my allotment, and the first load that my friend Clair had delivered I’d used up, so needed another load from her. Today was the day, and it was pouring with rain ALL day!! I got down the allotment just before 10am, because I wasn’t sure when in the morning she was going to arrive. It was drizzling, but was gradually getting heavier and heavier. If I wasn’t waiting for some manure then I would have gone home, but armed with my wellingtons and a waterproof, I soldiered on weeding the final bed, which I managed to get about one third of it done. I’m not complaining about the rain, we do need it desperately, but I wish it would rain all night, and not all day. Still I suppose we can’t have everything. Clair arrived about 10.45am and we both started to unload all the manure from the trailer into a massive pile on one of my beds. The rain kept getting harder and harder, and we were the only ones on site (sensible people were in the dry). It took us both about 45 minutes to unload all the manure, and then Clair left, and I then decided that the sensible thing to do would be to go home myself as well. When I got home I had to change ALL my clothes, except my socks they were dry!

Oh manure!! One of my favourite things in the world.

Thursday 23rd July 2015 – Chartwell.

Today I took the kids to another National Trust place but this time we went to Chartwell. It’s the family home of Winston Churchill. After walking miles and miles on Tuesday, I promised the kids that we wouldn’t be walking anywhere near as far today. Oops! The estate is very big, so there was a lot of walking to do. Still it didn’t seem that far, because we had lots to look at, and there were benches at frequent intervals to sit down on if your little legs were a bit tired. We arrived just before lunch time, and when we’d wandered round to find the right place to sit and have our lunch it was lunch time. A very friendly Robin kept coming to say hello. It was very brave and kept resting only a couple of feet from where we were sitting.

A very friendly Robin.

A very friendly Robin and no Christmas card in sight.

After lunch we wandered around the grounds, looked in the various lakes (George didn’t fall in!!) We saw the Croquet Lawn, but didn’t play. As we walked past it George said “Cricket”, I said, “No it’s croquet”. We bounced back and forth with this for a while, but he meant that he could hear a cricket insect, not the sport! Once we’d sorted this little bit of confusion out we went looking in the house. We’ve been in here before, and I saw an old Radio Times from 1938 priced at 2 pence. It’s gone up a bit since then and is now £2. You weren’t allowed to take any photos in the house, and I was holding my phone because it’s quite a tight fit in my jeans pocket. Twice I was asked to turn my phone off and put it away. I wasn’t using it!! I tried to explain that this was the case, but being as the volunteers were rather on the elderly side, they didn’t understand that I couldn’t turn my phone off in it’s case, and it goes off automatically. After this I hid it under the map they gave us as we walked round.

Lady Churchill's veranda. What a beautiful view.

Lady Churchill’s terrace. What a beautiful view.

Once we left the house we found an old bomb crater where a bomb dropped during the Blitz. Must have made a massive explosion because the  crater was huge!! Then it was on to the Sweet Chestnut Coppice and then onto the vegetable garden where there were so many wonderful fruit, flowers and vegetables were growing. On a sunflowers I saw a bumble bee collecting pollen and a lady bird minding it’s own business.

Now play nice there is enough for everyone.

Now play nice there is enough for everyone.

George got to have a go on the many tree swings that they have, and then it was time for an ice cream before we started our journey home. It was a very pleasant day, and only about 25 miles away. That’s another one ticked off the list of places I want to visit this year. We’ll all sleep well tonight.

Wednesday 22nd July 2015 – I’ve got a blister on the palm of my hand.

I popped to the allotment for a couple of hours today to continue with my weeding. I’ve only got one more bed that is full of weeds, and then plot 1 is practically sorted. Hopefully I can make a dent in that bed by the end of the week. I’m planning on taking the kids out again tomorrow and then have manure arriving on Friday (hopefully), so how much of it I’ll actually get done I don’t know. I also watered and fed various plants, and had a quick chat with some other plot holders (it’s not all work and no play you know). This year I sowed a packet of mixed Squashes and Pumpkins. They’re all doing really well, but until they start to produce fruits you have no idea what they’re going to be. I think one is a “Patty Pan”, but  as they grow bigger I’ll know for sure.

Lots of little ones are growing.

Lots of little ones are growing.

Then as I was weeding a bed where I am growing Carrots and Garlic, I decided that some of the garlic needed to be harvested. I’ve still got more to harvest, but what I’ve dug up so far this year, I’m very impressed with. They’re good sized bulbs (mostly), so I’ll dry them thoroughly and then they’ll keep until I need to use them.

Some of my garlic to keep away the vampires.

Some of my garlic to keep away the vampires.

With all this weeding, I’ve now got a blister on the palm of my right hand. I hope it goes down by this evening, because I’ve got bell ringing practice and ringing with a blister is not fun. Well that’s all for today, I’ve got some tidying to do in the garden at home, and some watering, but lunch is needed first of all. TTFN!!

Tuesday 21st July 2015 – Leith Hill

This afternoon Emily, George, Sam, Michelle and I went to Leith Hill. It’s a National Trust place, and as we’re members it was free. It’s classed as a countryside place, but if you want to go up the tower, then you have to pay (unless you’re a member, which we all are). We arrived just after noon, and found a bench to sit down and have our picnic lunch. The views are outstanding, and it’s part of “Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”. It doesn’t disappoint.

The view at Leith Hill.

The view at Leith Hill.

After lunch we climbed the tower and were able to get to the very top. It’s celebrating it’s 250th year (if I look this good after 250 years I’ll be very happy) and they were giving out free badges to commemorate this. Half way up the tower there was a room where you could try on some hats, and look like people back in the olden days. Of course we had to give them a go.

Hats any one?

Hats any one?

We then went exploring. Now as a family we have a motto which is “We’re not lost, we’re exploring!” This definitely applied today. We didn’t take a map with us, and decided to just follow the paths. That was a big mistake!! Every time you got to a crossing, each way didn’t give us any clue as to which path we were following. Suddenly we past a little cottage in  the middle of absolute nowhere, and at TNT van drove past delivering something. Then a couple of cars drove past. The road wasn’t a proper road with tarmac, just a track, so they may have been as lost as we were. There was no toilet, so we all needed to water the trees at various intervals. In the end we walked for just over 2 hours, going down and down, and then up and up. The tower was in top of the hill, so we needed to get to the top at some point. We followed tracks marked out by tractor wheels, which suddenly ended. It was far more entertaining than going to the gym for an hour. There was no phone signal so it was  tricky to find exactly where we were on Google Maps, so we just kept on walking and hoping that we would find our way home before it got dark. The kids were getting rather tired by this point, and to be honest so were Michelle and I. But we had no choice but to soldier on. I finally got a signal, and could see that we were in the middle of the woods (well I could tell Google Maps that myself). It was going through my mind that if something happened to us no one would find us….ever!! We finally sighted the tower again with great delight, and Michelle offered to buy us all an ice cream, which I think we’d earned.

George was so exhausted he had to lie down.

George was so exhausted he had to lie down.

Before we left, Michelle and I got a map (I suppose we should have got it sooner) to see where we had walked. Off the map apparently!! We did walk past some lovely cottages and a small farm. Oh the joy of some peace and quiet. A very quaint little hamlet and an old fashioned Phone Box that didn’t take any money, only cards.

Does anyone have 10p?

Does anyone have 10p?

Such a wonderful day, and lovely to catch up with my sister. On the way back to my sisters, George fell asleep. We had a cup of tea at my sisters, and then worked our way home, which was not easy during the rush hour. We had to change our route because of the traffic. I don’t know about the kids, but I’ll sleep well tonight.

It’s amazing what you can see from a tiny aeroplane window.

Mark’s in LA for several days at the moment, talking to film and TV people, so it’s just me and the kids. The days aren’t a problem because Mark is usually at work. The kids go to bed between 9-9.30pm and then it’s just me. So I then go to bed. It’s more comfortable sitting in bed than of the sofa. There doesn’t seem to be anything interesting on the TV at that time. The only time we can talk to each other is first thing in the morning when it’s 7am my time, but 11pm LA time. We FaceTime, which is fun. It’s all going really well for him so far. But as he was flying to LA, he went over Greenland and took several photos of icebergs breaking up in the sea, which from 35,000 feet up you could still see. They must have been huge at sea level. The sea is the brightest electric blue you could imagine. But I wanted to share this photo he took. I think it’s just amazing how you can see the the sea is still frozen in some parts, the mountains still with snow on, I could go on, but choose your own words to describe how it looks.

Monday 20th July 2015 – Now don’t forget your trowel!!

The kids are now on Summer Holidays, so I’m only going to be able to pop down to the allotment for a maximum of a couple of hours at a time now. Still it’s not a problem as I’ve got most of my plots sorted and it’s only wedding, harvesting, watering and feeding to do. If there are any problems at home I can leave what I’m doing and come home within 5 minutes. When I go down, I leave a little list of things I’d like the kids to do. Nothing major, but just little things to help out with the chores at home. They both did exactly what I asked, so they could have a special lunch. When I got to my plots this morning, I realised that I’d left both my trowels at home (I have one for the allotment and one for home). This was a bit of a pain, because I was hoping to do a substantial amount of weeding. Still the soil was soft, so I was able to pull up any weeds that I could, and will get the tricky ones next time I’m down. I sowed some more Sugar Snap Peas and Pea “Kelvedon Wonder” Hopefully these should be producing soon, because we do go through a fair few of these. I also watered various seeds that I sowed last week, and the Radish are already coming up. As I was moving some soil to plant some more Sugar Snap Pea seeds, I noticed a very hairy caterpillar. I think he’s a hibernating one, because he kept trying to hide in the soil.

A very hairy caterpillar in amongst my Sugar Snap peas.

When I got home I was welcomed by a wonderful sight of one of my Lillies in full bloom. I think they are wonderful flowers, but beware of their stamens they will mark your clothes.

Lillies are so pretty, but can make you sneeze.

Lillies are so pretty, but can make you sneeze.

Well that’s all for today. I’d better go and put the allotment trowel in my allotment bag ready for next time I’m on my plot. I may get an hour or so tomorrow, otherwise it’ll be Wednesday.

Saturday 18th July 2015 – London Film and Comic Com

Now I don’t usually go to this sort of thing. I went last year, only because Mark and the kids were going and they planned to go up by train, but someone decided to do something very silly in front of a train, so I had to pick them up from Raynes Park and then Mark drove the rest of the way there, so I stayed with them instead of coming home. I spent most of the time giggling at people dressed up. Not making fun of them, but seeing what extremes people will go to. But this year I was going because I am a HUGE Back to the Future fan. I’ve seen all the films in the cinema when they first came out (yes I’m that old) and there is just something about them, and of course Michael J Fox that is so wonderful and cute. I didn’t go dressed up as one of the character, but wore my “Jaws 19” T-shirt (those in the know will understand). The shark still looks fake even after all those films. Mark bought me, as part of my birthday present, a photo session with Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown), and Marc McClure (Dave McFly). These I was very happy with. Then a couple of months ago, I saw that Michael J Fox was going to be going. The tickets to have your photo with him were very expensive, so I was very reluctant to pay that much (I know he’s worth it, but…) The tickets sold, just like that, and when Mark got home he mentioned that he would be there, but the tickets had gone. I wasn’t surprised. “It’s lucky I got you one before they sold out!!” Mark told me. “WHAT!!!” Oh my, I love him so much. So yesterday the day started with picking up Emily’s friend T and driving to Comic Com. All the kids dresses up which was brilliant. They are Mick Travis from “If..” and Grell from “Black Butler”. Don’t ask me what they are, but to me it’s red hair and black suit.

All dressed up and ready for some fun.

All dressed up and ready for some fun.

We got there in plenty of time, it only took us 45 minutes to drive. Yes I know the car park is expensive, but if you compare that with the train tickets, it’s much cheaper to drive. The place was heaving!! So many more people than last year. It was so hot on the ground and first floors, the only way to describe it is like the boys locker room, all smelly and sweaty. Not very nice for a lovely lady like myself. The first thing that Mark and I did was to find where I was having my photo taken with Christopher Lloyd. Once we’d found that then everyone else went off in different directions. We’d planned to meet up for lunch in a certain place on the second floor which was much quieter. I queued for ages to have my photo taken, but it was worth it.

"Great Scott!!" It's Christopher Lloyd and me in front of the clock.

“Great Scott!!” It’s Christopher Lloyd and me in front of the clock.

Mark met me afterwards and we went strolling about. Well more of a shuffle because there were so many people about. I had my photo taken with a Storm Trooper, and some other soldier Troopers from Star Wars. I did a selfie with Freddy Krueger, and told him that “He scared me shitless when I was younger, and that he killed Johnny Depp.” I won’t put a link to the scene, because it’s a bit gory. He was very nice though and didn’t try to kill me in my dreams. I saw Muppet figures dressed up as Star Wars characters. I think Beaker and Doctor Bunsen Honeydew are my favourite.

This did make me giggle. They also had Animal, Link Hogthrob and Scooter dressed as Boba Fett, Han Solo and Lando.

This did make me giggle. They also had Animal, Link Hogthrob and Scooter dressed as Boba Fett, Han Solo and Lando.

Then it was onto the Michael J Fox talk. Trying to find where we had to go was a bit tricky. No one on the doors or at the help desk seemed to know. A huge amount of help they were. I finally found where we were supposed to go, but the general organisation of this event was very poor. Still Michael J Foxes talk was brilliant. He came on to a rapturous applause and a standing ovation. You have to listen very carefully to what he has to say, because his speech is now very slurred at times, but his sense of humour is brilliant.

Such a brilliant speaker, so much humour. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Such a brilliant speaker, so much humour. Thoroughly enjoyable.

People were allowed to ask him questions. I was wanting to ask him about his role in Curb Your Enthusiasm”, but didn’t. If you’ve not seen it, here’s a CLIP.

Then it was time for the thing I’d been waiting for all day. My photo with Michael J Fox and the DeLorean car. There were so many of us waiting and we were all in blocks. They called the Gold and Diamond tickets first, then Batch 1,2,3,4 and finally 5. Guess what batch I was in? Yes that’s right Batch 5!! I must have waited about an hour, but so did other people in the same batch as me. But we all kept chatting about various things and before we knew it, it was our turn. It’s like a cattle market waiting for your batch to be called up. The only way to describe it is like an Easy Jet queue, waiting to check in. You all huddle together and they call each flight in turn. But soon it was my turn, and there he was sitting in the car. I had to kneel down next to him, and being the age I am found it not terribly easy to get up again. How he managed to smile through out all those photos I’ll never know. I came out like a kid that had just managed to get her first lots of sweeties.

I can die happy now!!

I can die happy now!!

Once this was done, we all re grouped and then made our way back to the car to pay the horrendous car park fee (still cheaper than all 5 of us getting the train). I don’t think I’ll go again next year. Once is enough for me.

It was heaving with people!!

It was heaving with people!!

It was fish and chips for dinner, and then an early night because we were all exhausted. I think I’ll have to watch all the Back to the Future films again this week, just to put a full stop to the day.

Friday 17th July 2015 – Robbie’s last day.

Today was the last day that Robbie was helping me. I would have loved to have had him help me for longer, but now my children have broken up for the Summer holidays, I need to be around for them. I’ll still be going to the allotment, but at different times of the day, and not for as long. Robbie’s been a great help and we’ve got loads accomplished. I think he’s had fun, and learnt lots. He’s definitely enjoyed taking home various treats from my plots (don’t worry I’ve still got loads left for us). We continued from where I finished off yesterday. As I was weeding very carefully between the rows of Carrots, Spring Onions and Beetroot, Robbie was harvesting the Broad Beans. These did ok this year, but suddenly and without warning they got black fly. I did spray them which helped, but they just swarmed on suddenly over a couple of days. I’ve got some pods but not as many as I’d hoped. We filled in any gaps in the rows of Carrots with more seeds, and thoroughly watered those in. We sowed “Autumn King 2”, which I’ve sown before and they’re really good. We only had 2 hours on the plot today, so did what we could. We also planted out just over 20 Cauliflowers. When I mentioned that they needed to be planted about 12 inches apart, Robbie looked at me like I was mad, but I showed him some other ones that I’d planted out about 4-6 weeks ago and how big they’d got. He then realised that I knew what was best for them. Once we’d planted them out, we watered them in and protected them from slugs and snails and then netted them from the pigeons. Malcolm who has a plot near me said we could pick some of his black currants. They were big and fat and juicy. So once we’d pick some, it was time to clear all our tools away and take Robbie back home. But before we left, I told him that he had to say “Bye, bye” to the allotment, which he did, without questioning me. Thank you so much Robbie for all your help, it’s been so much fun. If he wants to pop down in about a months time to see how it’s all growing he’s very welcome.
