I sowed my Kohl Rabi “Modrava F1” in the greenhouse on 16th February, and they’ve been growing very well for the last 6 weeks. Now that they’re large enough, they can now be potted up into individual 3 inch pots. What better way to spend part of the Easter weekend but in the greenhouse having fun.
I’m getting very close to episode 300, I hope you’re getting as excited as I am?!
Today was a day of ups and downs. Firstly when I let the chickens out this morning, only 5 shot out of their house, like bullets out of a gun. Where was number 6? She was very poorly and still sitting in the house. Firstly I thought she’d gone to that great chicken coop in the sky, but she was just about with us, but only just. I wrapped her in a couple of Terry’s nappies and bought her inside the house. After a while she perked up a very small amount, but I had a vets appointment for her just before 9am. When we arrived she’d taken a turn for the worst and the vet and I decided the best thing was to put her to sleep. I couldn’t let her suffer. I then bought her home, and then left her in peace while I went to the allotment for a while. I couldn’t bury her straight away, because I needed my large fork, which was down the allotment. She wasn’t going to go anywhere, so I thought she would be safe on her own. On the allotment I cheered up. I was sad, but not distraught. On the allotment I dug over another couple of beds, and planted out my Garlic. Then I had a little space left, so sowed the first of the Carrots seeds. I’ve got lots more to sow, but today I sowed “Flyaway F1”. Once I was done, I went home (with my fork), had some lunch and then went to our local shop to get a box. Marty is now buried under my apple tree at the back of the garden. She is about 3 feet down, wrapped in a Terry’s nappy and in a cardboard box. There is no worry about her being dug up by a fox, because there is some black weed suppressant fabric on top, loads of wood chips and then a wheelie bin. I did shed a tear or two as I buried her. But I’d like to think that I gave her over a year of very happy memories and freedom that she wouldn’t have otherwise know.
Now is the time to start off your Squash. I’ve got 3 different packets to sow today. Butternut “Hawk F1”, which I grew last year and they were amazing. I think I ended up with 22 fruits in total, a couple you may remember were…how shall we put it…..looked like something rather rude. Also I’m sowing some called “Jumbo Pink Banana”, which I’m intrigued about, and finally a lovely selection of “Mixed Squash”, again which I sowed last year and I got some wonderful fruits off the plants. If you are wanting to sow your Squash straight outside then leave until early May at the earliest.
Yes I know that it’s 2 videos in one day, but I’ve been very busy. This afternoon I spent in my greenhouse at home, sowing 2 different varieties of Sweet Corn “Sweet Nugget F1” and “Swift F1” . Also a little update on how everything is getting on in my greenhouse.
What a wonderful day it’s been today. The sun is shining, the day is very warm, I had a new t shirt on (anyone guess what it refers to?), I was up the allotment, and it was my birthday. I’m 21 again you know!! I got lots done today, from sowing, digging and weeding, and a little bit of harvesting. Now is the time you can get your first lot of Spring Onions “White Lisbon” in, and also your Beetroot “Caboodles of Bountiful Beetroot”. Come and see what I got up to this morning.
Today was the first day that I’ve done some work on my allotment this year. I’ve been down to harvest the odd few bits, but not done any digging or sowing. But now that the days and nights are getting warmer, I think it’s about time I should start. The sun was shining which felt lovely and warm, however, the wind was very chilly so I had to wrap up warm. I managed to dig over my fist bed and sow one line each of Radish “Vienna” and Spinach “Samish”. So I’ve made a start. Take a look at what I got up to today.
Usually when a packet of seeds says that something will grow in a certain amount of time, it doesn’t. But my Cress did. It said I would be harvesting in 7 days, and it was right!!
Planting flowers in amongst your fruit and vegetables is very important. They help with so many things, plus they look very beautiful as well. There are loads of flowers to choose from. Do you want Annuals (last only 1 year), Biennials (last for 2 years) or Perennials (come up year after year). The list is endless! I’m exhausted just thinking about them all. Today I’ve sown just 5 different varieties of flowers. All of which are Perennials, they are:Aquilegias “McKana Giant Mixed”, Alyssum “Gold Dust”, Armeria “Ballerina Mixed”, Delphinium “Pacific Giants Mixed”, and Alstroemeria “Gardeners’ Store”. I hope you find some that you like as well.
