Thursday 5th May 2016 – How did I miss those?

Another glorious morning on my allotment this morning. Today is even hotter than yesterday, and I took the plunge today and wore my shorts. Yes I know, shock horror! My long gangly white legs were out for everyone to see. No one fainted at the sight of them, so that was good. On my plot this morning, I dug over a rather large bed where last year I grew some Sarpo Mira potatoes. Now you may remember the size of some of them? Most of them were normal sized but some were huge! I found several that were large, so have no idea how I managed to miss them when I dug the rest of them up last year. I’ve got enough to do mashed potato for all 4 of us for dinner, and the kids eat a lot of mashed potato. I love little surprises, don’t you?

How I managed to miss these last year I don't know. Still there's enough for mashed potato for 4 people.

I also weeded some of the tyres that I’m growing Strawberries in, and filled the gaps with plants that have started to grow outside the allocated Strawberry bed. Flowers have started to appear on my Strawberry plants already, which is a little earlier than I would anticipate. Hopefully I’ll have a wonderful crop this year and will make loads of jam!! I managed to dig over one bed and half of the next bed, so that was a good mornings work. I’m hoping to get down tomorrow afternoon again. The weather is supposed to stay fine and dry, so I’m going to make the most of it while it’s still here.

Wednesday 4th May 2016 – Potting up the Okra

The Okra have been growing very well on the kitchen window sill, but they’re now large enough to be moved into individual 3 inch pots. They are very fussy plants, as they require heat and water little and often. So not something for a beginner to have a go with. I know that Okra are not for everyone, but I like them. Come and see how they’re getting on.

Wednesday 4th May 2016 – May the Force be with my Asparagus!

About 3 years ago, I sowed some Asparagus seeds. You don’t have to do it that way, you can buy a crown of Asparagus from a garden centre. But you know me, I like to do everything the long way. Asparagus needs commitment, and if sown from seed, you can start to be harvest it in the third year. If from a crown, then you can harvest in the second year. This is the first time I’ve been able to harvest any, and today I was so proud. I went up the allotment and there staring at me were 4 beautifully long spears, another couple that are nearly ready and loads of others that are growing. I harvested 4 (that’s one each) and I’ll roast them in the oven and we’ll have them for dinner, with other food as well.

My very first Asparagus harvest!

I then continued with planting alternate lines of Carrots and Onions. I’ve finished sowing “Autumn King 2”, and then sowed “Norfolk F1” and the “Purple Haze F1“. I’ve still got more to do, which I’ll do tomorrow. The weather this week is supposed to be amazing, so I’ll be spending as much time as possible on my allotment. I’ll keep you up dated on what mischief I get up to.

Complete bed of Carrots and Onions. Still more to do.

Happy Star Wars day everyone. May The Force be with my Asparagus!!

Friday 29th April 2016 – Sowing Cucamelons.

For those on you who are familiar with these little gems of joy, you’ll know that I’m not making them up. For those of you who have never come across them before they are wonderful little fruits to grow and can be very prolific when they get going. Cucamelons are part of the James Wong collection, and only ever used to be found at Sutton Seeds, but now a days they’re much easier to find. This year I got mine from Mr Fothergill’s Seeds. Give them a go, they won’t disappoint.

Sunday 24th April 2016 – Potting up the Tomato seedlings

Oh my I’ve got a lot to do. You pick up the packets of Tomato seeds and think “Oh, they look interesting!”, then you see another one and another one that you just must to have. Before you know it, you’ve got enough Tomatoes to make 5 years worth of tomato sauce for pasta. This morning I potted up some of my Tomato seedling, but still I have loads more to do. So far I’ve done the following: “Shirley”, “Golden Sunrise”, “Jersey Devil Pointed Plum”, and “Chocolate Stripes”. And finally from Victoriana Nursery Gardens “Caspian Pink”

Wednesday 20th April 2016 – More Carrots and Onions!

I was only able to be on my plot for about and hours and a half today, because I had to be somewhere else at noon. But in that time I managed to continue where I left off yesterday. I dug over some more of the bed that I was working in and thoroughly weeded. Then I sowed 2 more lines of Onions and another line of Carrots “Autumn King 2”. The bed is now nearly full up, and hopefully I’ll be able to continue tomorrow afternoon. I then went and rang a Quarter Peal of Pudsey Surprise Major  which took us 46 minutes, which is actually very slow for the weight of bells we were ringing on. We dedicated the Quarter Peal to the Queen for her 90th birthday. I was ringing the treble, so was only Treble Bob Hunting. This will mean nothing to most of you, but to those of you in the know, it’ll mean something.

Carrots and Onions are standing in a row. How will the grow? I don't know!

Tuesday 19th April 2016 – Starting the Onions and Carrots.

I had the whole day free today which doesn’t happen very often! And the sun was shining and it was very warm, which was even better. So I decided to take lunch with me to the allotment. I had a lot planned for the day and wanted to get as much done as possible. Today I was going to see how many of my Onions and Carrots I could get in. I plant both of these together, because they’re the perfect pairing as they deter the nasty flies from plague the other one. I managed to get quite a few planted but not all that I took down because I had to dig over the bed before hand, and this take quite a while. The varieties of Carrots that I sowed today were “Rainbow mix of many Colours“, “Yellowstone F1” and “Autumn King 2”. After being on my allotment for just over 3 hours I was exhausted and needed to go home and get cleaned up before Mark and I went off to the cinema. The perfect end to the perfect day.

Saturday 16th April 2016 – Sowing Cauliflowers seeds & a Greenhouse update

April/May time is when you should start thinking about sowing your Cauliflowers seeds. There are so many different varieties and colours out there to grow. You’ll only find the white variety in the shops, so why not grow something a little different. This year I’m growing Romanesco which are green in colour. I’ve grown them before and they were wonderful. Also a little greenhouse update to see how various plants are getting on.

Saturday 16th April 2016 – Sowing Pumpkin Seeds

April is the perfect time to get your Pumpkin seeds started. What varieties are you growing this year? There are so many to choose from. This year I’m sowing some seeds that I saved from last years crop, and I think they’re Atlantic Giants. I’m also sowing a new variety from Pennard Plants “Casper White”. You don’t have to grow large Pumpkins, there are some wonderful small varieties out there, “Jack Be Little” is perfect for roasting whole. Lottie and Dottie are growing Pumpkins this year, will you grow one with them?
