Well the hosepipe ban starts today, so no one be naughty and use theirs. You can get fined up to £1,000 if you’re caught.
On a brighter note I’ve been looking for another long handed bulb planter for making planting my 100’s of potatoes much easier. I did buy one a few years ago, but it was crap and I broke it. I’ve looked in 3 garden centres without any luck, but then I found one on Amazon. Joseph Bentley Stainless Steel Long Handled Bulb Planter’ by Solus Garden and Leisure Ltd. I’ve ordered it! The reviews look great all 5 star, so we’ll see how long it takes me to break this one. I’ll let you know how I get on with it.

Wednesday 4th April 2012

Well that was a shock yesterday. We had rain and hail! I was out in the garden and I thought to myself “What’s this wet stuff falling from the sky?” It was a really heavy down pour and the soil is lovely and wet up to 1 inch down. We had a little more rain today. It’s definitely April showers now. No snow though thank goodness. Those poor people in Scotland and the other places that woke up to a load of snow.

Just a quick note to say “Thank you to everyone for their kind wishes to George”. Not wanting to go into too much detail, but he was sick several times during the day, not even able to keep liquid down. I took him to the doctors in the afternoon, and she spent at least 20 minutes checking him over. She was very concerned about him as he had no energy and kept falling asleep, she then phoned A & E. I had to take him there straight away. My wonderful friend Sally came to collect us from the doctors and took us straight to the hospital. What an absolute star she is, at true friend. He was seen almost immediately and admitted over night. He was attached to a drip whilst he slept and I could stay with him. By morning he was much improved and could eat some breakfast. He was discharged at 10am, but they don’t know what caused him to be sick, just that he’s better now.
Thank you everyone for all the wishes you’ve sent. George really appreciates it. He’s never ill, so it was a little funny to see him asleep where ever he sat down, but very worrying at the same time.

Well I was hoping very much to go to the allotment today and tomorrow, but my little boy has decided to be ill. Poor little George he is never ill, and was very upset. He’s asleep at the moment, and has been for about 1 and a half hours. He won’t be going to school tomorrow either, as he still can’t eat. I’m taking him to the doctors later today to see if there’s anything I can do for him. If he can eat then he can get better. He tried some lunch, but that didn’t stay down long.

Well I’ve just sown lots of things red: Red onions called “Red Karmen”, red Brussels Sprout called “Falstaff” and red cabbage called “January King 3”. I got a bit carried away with the red onions as I decided to buy 2 packets only to then discover that there were 50 in each packet! I think we’ll have enough onions to last a while, especially with all the white onions I got also.

Another beautiful day, so I’ve just come in from the greenhouse after sowing the following flower seeds: Hollyhocks called Halo Mixed. I’ve already got some growing in the garden, and they’re lovely, but I wanted some different coloured ones. They can grow to over 6 feet tall, so if you do grow them, make sure you put them in the back of a bed. If any of the leaves get rust spots on the just cut them off and dispose of them. They’ll flower through out the summer and attract all the bumble bees. Then when they’ve finished flowering just cut them back to just above the ground and they’ll come back the following year. Also I sowed some perennial Sunflowers, which look fab as well as several varieties of Poppy. Also some seeds on matchsticks, which I haven’t the faintest idea what they are. I got a free sample from “Tena”. (Only the women will understand what they are, I don’t use then by the way), but if someone is giving away free seeds I won’t say no.I just hope they don’t grow what I hope they don’t? That would be interesting. And last but by no means least some ornamental grasses. Phew!

Last post for today you’ll be pleased to know. I’ve sown Sprouting Broccoli, Celeriac, Celery, Cauliflowers and more Leeks. As well as some sweet peas seeds. I think that’s enough for today don’t you? Now for a drink to celebrate and to start dinner, otherwise the kids will complain they’re hungry.
See you tomorrow.

Monday 26th March 2012

Back again! I just think it’s best to do a few bits and let you know, rather than do everything and then write a huge long essay that nobody will want to read.
I’ve now sown more Cucumbers which are called “Swing”. I’m not sure if I need to prepare a playground for them or what? Also some Coriander which is supposed to be ready in 6 weeks or so. I’ve not sown all the seeds, just a few, then I can sow more in about 4 weeks time and so on, then I’ll have it lasting most of the summer. I’ve also sown a lovely selection of Sweet Peppers they’re called “Rainbow blend”, and they’re from Victoriana. Hopefully I won’t get them mixed up with the chillies! A bit of a shock if I do and put them in a salad. I think I deserve a nice cup of tea, then out for a bit more.

Monday 26th March 2012

Me back again. I might post again a bit later as I’m waiting for a man to come and replace my radiator. Oh er missus!
I’ve just sown some more American or land cress. I did sow some last year and it was fantastic. It’s very similar to watercress, but doesn’t need to be grown in water. I’ve sown it the same way I sow lettuce seeds, in a medium size round pot. It should be up in a few days, and ready to eat in hopefully 2 weeks or so. I’ve also sown a selection of tomatoes. Black Russian, Golden Sunrise and Maskotka. I’m curious to wonder who thinks up these names. It’s like going into IKEA, the names do make me chuckle. Yes I’m easily amused I know.

Monday 26th March 2012

About 4 days ago I decided to sow some cress seeds. I didn’t have any kitchen towel which I normally sow them on, so I decided to sow then in some compost instead. Besides, when ever you buy cress in the shops it always comes in a little compost anyway. Well I’m pleased to report that it’s come up beautifully, and much better than when sown on kitchen towel. I’ll give it a couple of days to get taller then I can cut it and put it in Marks sandwiches.
