Monday 28th May 2012

Well this afternoon I managed to sow the last of my climbing french beans. I got them from Victoriana and they’re called Fasold. Everything is growing well in the greenhouse and as we’ve had this really hot weather I need to water daily. Fortunately most plants are in trays, so I can give them a good soaking. The little birdies in my nesting box are making lots of noise now, and the parents are flying back an forth constantly. I’m very excited.

Another wonderful day, we are being spoilt. I’m sure it’ll end soon, and then we’ll be back to the rain. I had a good morning on the allotment today. I planted out my baby sweetcorn, and between them I planted some squashes. Hopefully they’ll cover the ground well, and slow the weeds coming through. I had a major water of one of my plots, I’ll do the other tomorrow. A fellow allotment holder Malcolm, (lovely chap he is) gave me 12 runner beans that I planted. and I also did some more weeding. Must get sorted what I’m going to do tomorrow. I don’t usually put the tender crops like courgettes, beans and sweetcorn in until the beginning of June, but the night time temperatures are warm so no worry about frosts.

Sunday 27th May 2012

Another wonderful day. We had a BBQ and ate outside. Then after dinner I sowed my Runner Beans. I got a packet that was called Summer Medley. Inside there were 3 packets of seeds Sunset, Lady Di and Desiree. I’ll be interested to see how they all turn out. I’ll let you know. Must get back to tidying the front garden now.

Friday 25th May 2012

Nearly in June so the tender plants like tomatoes, courgettes and beans can go out soon. Another hot day, but at least we had a breeze today which made it feel cooler. I made a little film today down the allotment, as well as 2 yesterday. Hopefully Mark will be able to sort those out this weekend. I managed to finish weeding another bed. I feel like I’m making progress with the weeding. I also planted my onion seedlings and planted a few more cabbages. We’ve got lots of cabbages to last us through the winter, I know the kids love sautéed cabbage Mark isn’t too keen on it. This weekend I’ll spend in the garden giving that a tidy and several trips in the greenhouse will be needed. Just the perfect way to spend the weekend. May do a BBQ on Sunday.

Thursday 24th May 2012

Another beautifully sunny day. Slightly hotter than yesterday. I managed 2 hours on the allotment this morning and I managed to plant more cabbage and some leeks. As well as strimming more and weeding loads. There weren’t many people on site this morning, not really the most sensible time to go, but as that’s the only time I have free I’ve got no choice. Sun cream is essential, but when you strim some bits always fly up and stick to you. I’ve got sock dirt marks, lovely dirty knees, dirt on my shoulders and on my face. Don’t ask, I don’t know how it got there.

Wednesday 23rd May 2012

Now don’t faint at what I’m about to say next…I wore my shorts today for the first time. Yes I know it’s a scary thing exposing my white legs, but it’s got to be done. It’s a beautiful sunny day today, the car said 25 degrees which is amazing! I planted more cabbage plants and covered with netting and then did some more weeding. I’ve nearly finished another bed, then I’ll start another one. The weeding is endless, but it keeps me out of mischief.

Monday 21st May 2012

This week promises to be warm and sunny, but not much sign of that today. It was dry, but cloudy this morning. As I type this the sun is just appearing. I popped to the allotment this morning for a couple of hours and did the obligatory weeding and strimming. I also planted some more sprouting broccoli and some cabbage. I’ve sorted out all the frames I need to put over the brassicas, but I need to buy more netting. As I was weeding the bed that I put the red onions in last year I found some? Back in April last year when I planted them it was so hot and dry that they didn’t grow at all and I thought they’d all died, but they were sitting just below the surface. However, even though they’ve been in for 1 year, they’re the same size as when I first put them in. I don’t understand that, but there you go. I hope this years ones do better. Tomorrow is supposed to be 25 degrees, wow! so I’ll be down in the afternoon.
