Sunday 15th February 2015 – And so it begins again!!

What do you do on such a lovely sunny Sunday? Well that’s quite easy, you go and play in the greenhouse. Today I spent the afternoon in my greenhouse starting off my Garlic and Onion sets in half toilet rolls. I’ve been saving up our toilet roll tubes since this time last year and still I’ve not got enough for all my garlic and onions. I even had my sister saving them for me as well. It’s not something that you can ask your neighbours for. They know I’m a bit odd and this would just make them realise that I’m completely dotty!! We all get on really well, but there are somethings you just don’t discuss. This year I’ve got the following Onions sets all from Mr Fothergill’s Seeds: “Sturon” which I do grow every year and they tend to grow really well, “Centurion” which I’ve also had great success with and “Hercules”. How do they get their names? I imagine my Hercules Onions running around with a beard and a nappy on like in Jason and the Argonauts, and my Centurion Onions with red helmets, being “Stwiked and thwon to the floor very roughly!” Like in Monty Python – Life of Brian. Now briskly on to the Garlic. This year I got mine from Homebase and the only variety they had was “Casablanca” I’ve never tried these before so it’ll be interesting to see how they grow. Every time I go in the greenhouse I’ll have to say to them “Here’s looking and you Garlic!” Enough of the terrible cliches, I think I’d better go now.

Garlic and Onions starting to grow. There are more don't worry.

My Chickens have finally arrived!!

The last few days have been very interesting and exciting, well for me anyway. Mark just leaves me to it, and nods and smiles in all the right places. Saturday 7th February was the day that we had to go and collect our new chickens. As we had to go down to Southampton to get them, which is about and hour and a half drive away, we decided to make a day of it. So on the way we stopped at The Devils Punch Bowl to have a look around.

Nothing like a 3 mile walk on a cold Saturday morning!!

Nothing like a 3 mile walk on a cold Saturday morning!!

We’ve never been here before but it’s a National Trust place that I’ve wanted to visit, but never got round to. We put on our warm coats, gloves, hats and scarves and put our wellingtons in the car and after I’d packed up lunch off we went. It was a cloudy day, dry but rather chilly. The Devils Punch Bowl is very beautiful even in winter, but I can imagine that it’s glorious in the summer. We went on a 3 mile walk following a specific path, which went down and down. When this happens you know that you’ve got to climb up and up at the end. The kids were very excited to see some snow still on the ground. It was very muddy so if you go visit it soon, make sure you take suitable footwear, flip flops just won’t do! We got back to the car park and cafe for lunch and sat inside and ate (we did buy a hot drink each so we were not being that cheeky). As we were eating, I got a text message to say that we could go and pick the chickens up sooner that we were told, so once we’d finished our lunch we got back in the car and drove to the chicken pick up point. I expected that were would be collecting our chickens from a farm, or at least a chicken rescue place, but no. We drove into a car park, and there were several large cages crammed full with chickens. We’d taken 3 large cardboard boxes with us to put them in and had cut holes in the sides for ventilation. I reckoned on 2 birds per box. Some people turned up with crisp boxes and other small boxes. To be honest I was quite stunned by what people though would be good transportation holdalls. When it was our turn she grabbed 6 birds who were all very scared and frightened and shoved 3 in 2 of the boxes. You could have fitted all 6 in one box as our boxes were so large. We then carried them to the car and started the long journey back home. The hens were quiet on the journey back. They were in the dark so they were very subdued. When we got them home we put them straight in their new house. They didn’t mind me picking them up and putting them in. I think they could tell that they were in a lovely place now. We tucked them up and left them for the night. On the Sunday morning they were still very unsure, and it took them ages to come out in their run and get their food. But eventually them got brave and ventured out. They didn’t eat much that first day, but since then, they’ve soon made up for that. I then bought some wire fencing to make their run a little larger and as the days have gone on they love coming out and exploring the grass and finding worms.

Freedom!!

Freedom!!

They’re getting used to various noises, but some noise make them all panic and scamper back inside. They didn’t mind me using the drill to put an extra lock on their back door, BUT when a crow made a noise in a tree about 30 meters away, that made them panic and they all shot straight back in their house. Now they’ve been with us for 5 days and they’re getting a little more adventurous. When I open their door in the morning they come straight out for their food, and yesterday (Wednesday) we got our first egg from them, and another one today (Thursday). Not laid in the nesting boxes, but never mind, I’m sure they’ll figure that one out soon.

Hopefully the first of many.

Hopefully the first of many.

We have 6 names for them, but at the moment have only allocated names to 2 of the chickens. Saruman is one, as this one picks on all the other chickens, and the smallest and cutest is Gizmo. Yes they’re all film related, but what else would you expect from us?

Robot Overlords UK trailer, poster and release date

It’s finally here… Go and see it otherwise I’ll send the chickens after you.

MarkStayWrites's avatarMark Stay Writes

Well, it’s been all go the last couple of weeks and I thought a quiet Sunday afternoon might be the best time to summarize the latest Robot Overlords news.

First, we have at last a UK release date of 27th March and a trailer:

And a quad poster to go with it (clicken to enlargen):

RO Quad Poster

We also have an official Facebook page, and I’ve started collating images from the film and the book over on Pinterest.

And the book is out this week, too, so there’ll be quite a few interviews and blog pieces from me over the next few weeks.

We’re very nearly there: after over four years of writing, filming and post-production, the film will finally be out in the wild. It’s a thrilling and slightly terrifying feeling: like sending one of your kids off to school for the first time. Hopefully the other kids will…

Tuesday 27th January 2015 – Bird box and a bit of a tidy.

Today was fairly mild, so I spent the afternoon in the garden sorting out some stuff. Firstly I needed to clear out the bird box from last year. When I first got it, I wasn’t sure if I needed to clear it out each year, or leave it alone. So I spoke to someone from the RSPB and they told me to clean out the old nest each year, and then disinfect the box. So this is what I’ve been doing once the birds have fledged and I’ve had 15 minutes spare. The nest that they’d made last year was about 4 inches tall, with a lovely little dip in the middle for the babies to grow. It was very compact and sturdy. It amazes me every time.

Such a perfect little home.

Such a perfect little home.

I looked at the bottom of the nest and it was all made of moss, which they must have got from my lawn as I have an area under the holly bush that it all moss and no lawn. When I looked closer, I saw some little eggs that had been pushed right to the bottom of the nest. They had 2 broods last year, and I thought that they got rid of the eggs that didn’t hatch, or ate them. Maybe they do, and she forgot about these few that were down the bottom. They were so tiny and small. It’s amazing that when the babies are born they fit into the egg. And they grow so quickly, about 3 weeks after they hatch they fledge!! The eggs are the size of the end of my little finger, which I put in shot so you could get some idea of the size.

Such tiny eggs, but perfectly formed.

Such tiny eggs, but perfectly formed.

Once I’d taken all the nesting out, I gave the box a good wash and now it’s ready for the birds when they come back in the spring. I also tidied the front garden of leaves, weeds, and rubbish that has blown in recently, and then tidied the back garden. There wasn’t much to do, just a quick going round to make sure everything is in order. I then planted out the rest of my white strawberry runners, or Pine berries. I didn’t get any fruit from them last year, but loads of runners, so this year I’ll cut off any runners and hopefully get loads of fruit. Well what a busy afternoon that was. It’s getting dark now so I’m stopping, but hopefully I can get in the greenhouse tomorrow as I’ve got things to do in there as well.

Monday 26th January 2015 – Time to Chit your potatoes.

I’ve just done the first gardening job for the new season. My potatoes arrived recently, and I’ve just cleared the tops of the kitchen cupboards ready to house them for the next 6-8 weeks. I always chit my potatoes on top of my kitchen cupboards. They do really well up there. Make sure when you do chit your potatoes that you put them in full fun, and in a frost free place. If the frost gets to them now, then all the shoots that have started to develop will die and you will either loose your crop entirely, or get a very poor one. You can either put them in egg boxes, or do as I do and put them on metal trays. This year I’ve only got 2 varieties from Mr Fothergill’s and they are 1 bag of King Edwards, and 3 bags of Sarpo Mira. They both did incredibly well last year, and I got some record sized potatoes from my Sarpo Mira. So that’s the first job done, the next one is the onions and garlic, but I’ll blog about those when I’ve done them.

Twas on this day 20 years ago, we were manacled together.

I’ll try not to get too soppy, but 20 years ago today I did the best thing every. I married Mark. I would never have imagined that 20 years down the line we would still be so happy, if not happier than when we first started out. I’ve nearly been married to him for half my life, as I was only 20 when we got married (my birthday is in a couple of months time). I just want to say “Thank you so much for being the best husband I could have asked for, and more”. Let’s keep going until we’re old and doddery.

We haven't changed a bit...well maybe just a little bit.

All coated up.

I’ve just come in from putting on the second coat of wood preserver on my new chicken coop. I was hoping to do it this morning, but it took all morning for the frost to go from the chicken coop. We woke up this morning to a very hard frost and the temperature at about -2!! I hope it’s not like that tomorrow morning as I have to leave the house at 7am!! Well it is winter after all. I’d better get my thermal mittens out just incase. At least we don’t have snow so I shouldn’t complain that much.

My Coop is all ready for it’s new inhabitants.

On Wednesday of last week, my new chicken coop arrived, and Mark spent Saturday putting it together for me. I helped a bit, and so did the kids, but most of it could be done by 1 person. I’ve just come in from felting the roof and putting the first coat of wood preserver on it. I need to do another one tomorrow as it needs 2 or 3 coats. I’ll just to 2 as it’s already got some preserving coating on it. Then in a years time, I’ll do it again. Hopefully this will make the house last much longer. Just a little warning when you go and get a roll of felt from the builders merchant….it’s very heavy!! About 20 kilos in fact. I only needed a little bit, but you can’t just buy a little bit. Still in the spring, I’ll re felt the shed roof, so I’ll use it up that way. I vaguely knew how to felt a wooden roof, but instead of asking my dad for advice I looked in our DIY book. And guess what? I was right about how it should be done. To be honest, I’m rather proud of myself for doing what I think is a good job.

All ready for my new babies.

All ready for my new babies.

I’m sure there is at least one person out there who will be horrified by my efforts. But it was my first time, and I am no longer a roof felting virgin!!
