Thursday 16th July 2015 – It’s surprising what you can get done when you put your mind to it!!

Today I was on my own, because Robbie was elsewhere. Still I managed to occupy myself for the 4 and a half hours I was on my plot for. I arrived just before 10am and had planned to give plot 2 a final inspection for any weeds that had been missed, then to trim any overgrown grass round the edges, harvest anything that was ready and then thoroughly water and feed the plants. I was very systematic with it all, and started at the beginning and finished at the end. When I came to the Kohl Rabi bed I found some rather bizarre shaped ones. Well I’ve grown them, so I guess that’s what I should expect. These 4 don’t seems to know that they’re supposed to be round! Still I’m sure they’ll taste good.

I think I should have told them they were supposed to grow round.

I think I should have told them they were supposed to grow round.

I harvested the last of the Peas, but have left the sticks in because I’ll plant some more Pea and Sugar Snap seeds tomorrow. Now comes the fun job of popping them all. I’ll ask the kids to help with that. I wonder how many we’ll loose? Then it was onto the bed with the Popcorn, some Pumpkins and the Graffiti Cauliflowers in. They’re all growing really well, especially the Cauliflowers. When I get those lovely bright purple heads on them, I’ll show you.

From front to back: Cauliflowers, Popcorn and Pumpkins.

In a bed up the end I have some Chop Suey Greens growing, and still have a little bit of spare space in that bed, so sowed the last of my Beetroot “Chioggia”, another row of Spring Onions “White Lisbon”  and another row of Radish “Black Spanish”

Now every year something grows so superbly fabulous. You never know what it’s going to be, but this year it’s my Cabbages. They’re already starting to get lovely and firm in the middle and measure about 12 inches across already. We all lovely cabbage (and that includes the chickens), so hopefully we’ll have lots to keep us going over the winter. I’ve got 15 growing, and the Kale is growing really well to. Must be a good year for brassicas.

Cabbage and Kale. All growing really please. Mummy is very happy.

So here is a lovely view of plot 2, all beautiful and wonderful. Hopefully I can keep it at this standard all through the summer.

Apart from the compost heaps to sort out (a winter job), plot 2 is complete.

Apart from the compost heaps to sort out (a winter job), plot 2 is complete.

Then once that was all done I had my lunch and then started doing the same with plot 1. Now with Robbie’s help over the last 4 weeks, plot 1 is looking much improved, but still needs work if it wants to be at the same level as plot 2. But here is some of it as it looks now. The Rhubarb is growing well again, but I won’t be harvesting any more for a good couple of weeks at least. I’ll just keep watering and feeding it well, and I’ll start to grow very soon.

Rhubarb is growing again. Time to harvest some more in a couple of weeks.

I then titivated the bed where the Parsnips, Onions and Carrots are growing. I had to sow some more carrot seeds because, either the ants keep running off with the seeds, or the slugs are eating the tops. I had the same problem last year. I’ve now put some pellets on top of the row I’ve sown so hopefully that’ll sort out part of the problem. It also means that you know where to water which is always a good thing. After all that, it was getting on for 2.30pm and time to go home. I would have stayed a bit longer, but George finished school at 2.30pm, and had forgotten to take his key with him (silly boy). I couldn’t have him sitting on the doorstep waiting for me, it’s just not fair. But before I went I wanted to take a picture of the greenhouse to show you how it’s getting along. The tomatoes are growing bigger and bigger, and I gave all the plants inside the greenhouse a thorough watering.

The greenhouse plants are growing well.

Well that’s all for today. More tomorrow, but I’ll only be on site for a couple of hours with Robbie (his final day with me). But I’ll let you know what we get up to tomorrow. I need a shower, I’m a bit stinky now!!

Wednesday 15th July 2015 – Let’s banish those weeds!!

Again today was a day of weeding, watering and feeding. Robbie and I started where we left off yesterday, but I only had him for a couple of hours today. But we made the most of that time and swapped between weeding or watering as we went along. When we first arrived on site, I asked him to open the shed as I had to pop for a quick chat with a fellow plot holder (only a little chat). When I got back to Robbie he had got everything out that we needed, had opened the greenhouse and was already weeding. I was very impressed. By the time we finished, plot 2 is now perfect and weed free again, and watered thoroughly, and plot 1 is very nearly done. Hopefully by the end of the week it’ll be perfect as well. I’ve only got Robbie once more and that is Friday, so tomorrow I’ll be on my own with my music to keep me company, and the distant shouts and screams from the race track near by, because my daughter’s school is having their sports day there.

Tuesday 14th July 2015 – Let’s get a weeding!!

With plot 1 nearly to the standard that I’m pleased with, it was time to have a break from that plot, and start weeding and watering plot 2. I told Robbie that now we’re at the stage where all that needs to be done is weeding a bed, then watering it thoroughly with feed, harvesting anything from that bed and then moving onto the next bed and then doing the same. This can get a bit monotonous for those who like to chop and change. But for me, then sense of everything looking perfect and weed free is just what I aim for every year. Whether I get to that point is another thing, but it’s always good to aim for something. Also I harvested my first potato plant, which I gave the produce to Robbie to take home so that he could share them with his family at dinner time. I’ve still got a few of last years potatoes left at home in the shed, so I’d better use them up quickly before this years ones are ready. That means that all the ones I grew last year have lasted all year, and I’ve not had to buy any potatoes at all!!! This is what I aim to do, but it’s the first year that it’s happened. As Robbie and I were walking back to my car at 1pm he said to me, “Thank you for letting me do this with you.” I was so touched. I was hoping that he’d enjoyed himself, and learnt something useful. He replied, “I’ve learnt from the best.” He seemed a little shy, which is not like him at all. He has worked very hard  and even in some very hot temperatures, and I’ve only got him for a couple of hours tomorrow and Friday. Then I’m back on my own. Hopefully he can come and help me again during another college holiday, but we’ll have to see what he has planned.

Monday 13th July 2015 – A bit of drizzle!!

Today was a different sort of day because we had rain!! I’ve not seen that wet stuff for weeks and weeks. It was rather exciting actually. But because it was drizzle it didn’t penetrate the soil, so watering was still needed. Today Robbie and I got loads done, if getting a little damp at the same time. We managed to weed another bed so it’s ready for something to now be put in, which will most probably be the Celeriac. Firstly it needs some manure, so I’ll have to contact my friend Clair for some of that. I then taught him all about side shooting Tomatoes, which considering as he’d never done it before, and it’s rather complicated to explain, he picked it up straight away. So during a bit of rather heavy drizzle we hid in the greenhouse and got that job done. As we walked to the tap to wash our hands before we had our lunch I noticed a tiny baby Pumpkin growing. I imparted more knowledge onto Robbie that not all Pumpkin flowers will produce a fruit. For those of you who don’t know it’s the female flower that has the baby, a bit like in real life (unless you’re a seahorse). I was able to show him both types of flowers so that was good. Hopefully in October it’ll be a huge pumpkin, but only time will tell.

My first Pumpkin!! Grow HUGE my beauty!!

We decided that having lunch in the car would be the most sensible thing to do. My bench was rather wet, and the thought of us both getting wet bottoms was something that neither of us wanted. We chatted about all sorts of things, and listened to music on the radio. Once we’d eaten we continued with more weeding and spreading of wood chips in various places. Then just before 1pm it really started to rain quiet hard, so we harvested a couple of Kohl Rabi and some Chard and left. We had a few bits of rubbish to take to the tip so did that before I took him home.

Two lovely Kohl Rabi. I think I'll roast ours tonight.

Hopefully the weather will be kinder tomorrow, but both Robbie and I don’t mind a bit of rain, just not too much.

Saturday 11th July 2015 – The perfect Saturday.

Today the sun shone all day and it was lovely and warm. I’m sorry if you had rain where you were today, but I expect next time we have rain, you’ll have sun. I spent the morning doing boring housework things (but they’ve got to be done), Emily and I made some cakes and then after lunch (and a little nap. Well I was at a friends party last night and Mark and I didn’t get home until midnight), I spent all afternoon in the garden pruning, watering, mowing the grass and weeding. Just generally having a bit of a tidy and making it all look beautiful. I had to pop to both my neighbours because I have some trailing plants that were easier to prune from the other side. We’re a very sociable bunch of neighbours so popping round via the back gate was no problem. It didn’t take long. I’d rather prune them myself, then I know that it’s been done properly. I’m very protective of my plants, as I’m sure you’ve most probably realised by now. Both the back garden and front garden are now ready for summer which is great. Just watering and a little bit of titivation (is that a word?) is all that should be needed now. Little and often is the key.

My front garden, surrounded by a lovely picket fence.

And the back garden. I keep watering the grass, but we've had so little rain, the grass is still turning brown. Still it's greener than the grass out the front.

Friday 10th July 2015 – The Fruit patch is weed free.

A huge thanks to Robbie for helping get my fruit patch with all my Gooseberries, Raspberries, Tayberry, Goji Berry and my Blueberries finally sorted out. Now it’s all sorted I’ll buy some black plastic to cover the soil and retain the moisture and then put on a thick layer of wood chips on the top to hopefully stop the weeds and grass from coming through. We put in 2 new Blueberry plants today which are called “Blueberry Bluedrop” and “Blueberry Sunshine Blue” Hopefully they’ll be happy in their new home and will grow well and produce loads of Blueberries in the coming years. It was a hot one today so after we’d cleared another bed it was time for lunch. After lunch we weeded and watered and then it was time to take Robbie back home. It was the end of the week, so he was a little bit tired, plus he’d had a performance last night so I think was still a little tired from that as well. Hopefully he’ll have a restful weekend because he’s back with me again on Monday and for most of the week. It’s his last week with me because my kids will then break up for the summer holidays and I’ll need to spend time with them. I’ll still go to the allotment, but little and often though.

Thursday 9th July 2015 – The Allotment Greenhouse is full!!

The greenhouse down on my allotment is now full up with “Roma” Tomatoes, and Tomatillos now. They’re all in their final pots and hopefully they’ll grow really well now.

Robbie came to help me again today which was brilliant. We’re still working our way through the bed with all the soft fruit bushes in, but we’re nearly done, which is great. We also planted out some Sprouting Broccoli which when trying to cover it with netting was much easier with two people, rather than trying to do it on your own. It’s great fun having Robbie with me, we chat about all sorts of things and have such a fun time, but work hard as well. I’ve only got him for the rest of this week and then next week, but then my kids break up for the summer, so they’ll need me. But he has been a huge help over the 4 weeks that he’s been with me. I hope that he’s also learnt a huge amount. I’m sure he has.

Wednesday 8th July 2015 – Summer Party.

Hachette Children’s Group had their Summer Party last night on the “Roof Terrace” at their offices. Me being one of their authors with “Lottie and Dottie Sow Carrots” and “Lottie and Dottie Sow Sunflowers” I was invited. I was very excited!! I bought a new dress for the occasion and spent the evening chatting to lots of other authors, and all the wonderful editors and members of the team. We drunk Champagne (I only had a couple of glasses….well maybe 3, they were small) and I also had a couple of beers, and lots of canapés as they were being handed round. Everyone was so wonderful. Mark and I left about 9.30pm and by the time we’d walked to Waterloo (it’s not far and a very pleasant walk along the Thames) got the train and got home it was knocking just past 11.30pm. Way, way past my bed time!! So an early night for us both tonight I think. As we came into our square Mark noticed a little hedgehog on the grass. We didn’t want to scare it, but Mark took some photos of it before we left it alone to carry on with it’s night hunting for slugs, snails and worms.

It was lovely on the Roof Terrace, although rather windy.
