Not-so-giant Atlantic Pumpkins – Claire’s Allotment part 155

Tuesday 4th October 2011

Met Sean today and we went to the Harvest Show in London today. Basically it’s a small version of Gardeners’ World. No tarantulas though! It was a lovely day, and I took loads of photos, which I’ll have to get Mark to upload, and do what he does so well. Sean and I were filming 1 bit on some steps, and were nearly at the end and this lady suddenly interjected “Excuse me, but can you move, there’s a elderly lady behind you.” She wasn’t there when we started because I looked. That’s an out take to keep. She wasn’t fast climbing stairs either. Oh and I have no sense or direction. It took me ages to find Victoria Street. There’s just too many roads in London. I kept going down the wrong one, this is why I need a Sat Nav.

Popped to the allotment this morning for more weeding and strimming. It was a lovely morning with the sun shining.
I managed to weed another bed, and nearly finish another one. I’ve taken all my Baby Sweetcorn plants out, as they’d finished a long time ago. I also harvest a few more Squash and Pumpkins, and yes I found more rogue Potatoes. I’ve now put all the Potatoes in a plastic tray with holes in, so the mud on the outside should dry and then I can store them in the shed. The mornings are definitely getting cooler. Brrr!

How can I tell if my cabbages are ready?

Thursday 15th September 2011

What a glorious day, it seems like Summer has returned. The mornings are chilly, but when the sun wakes up, the heat comes through, and sun glasses are needed. We’d better make the most of it, I don’t know how long it’ll last. Popped my new wheelbarrow wheel on today. I was assured over the phone, that one wheel fits all. All I can say is “No it blooming well doesn’t!” The wheel fits, but the metal axle is too large for the new one, so can’t go through the wheel. I’ll have to give them a call to find out what to do. These things are never easy are they? Anyway, besides that I weeded more, and harvested some Pumpkins that were ready. They’re all quite small but my largest one hasn’t finished yet, so is still in. I also found more rouge Potatoes….will finding them never end?

It’s getting there, slowly but surely. This morning I weeded 2 more beds, strimmed some grass, found a few rouge Onions and Potatoes, and harvested a Cabbage. All in all a good morning’s work. This afternoon I made a couple of films in the greenhouse, and nibbled on a Tomato that was ripe. It was so sweet and juicy. Also, jolly exciting (well I’m excited anyway) my new wheelbarrow wheel has arrived through the post wrapped in only what can be described as cling film. Didn’t come with the postman, but by van. My neighbour was very confused when he delivered it, as I was on the allotment at the time. Must now find the adjustable spanner.

Well the winds have calmed down since yesterday, it’s still very breezy, but not enough to knock you off your feet. I did feel sorry for those living in Northern Ireland and Scotland yesterday as they did all get battered. Thank you hurricane Katia for coming to see our little island. Went to the allotment this morning and was a very busy bee. I think I’ve dug up ALL my Potatoes. I’m sure I’ve missed a few, I always do. I’ve got enough to last for quite a while now. The reds did very well, I can’t remember which ones I got, but they’ll make colourful mash, especially if I leave the skins on. I grew some in tyres, and they did just as well as those grown in the ground. They’re much easier to find when they’re grown in containers. We’re having some some dinner tonight, so I must go and clean the mud off some of them.

Another day and more digging. Popped to my patch this morning, and had a wonderful time. I dug up more Potatoes, all the rest of my Onions, picked more Tomatoes, a huge amount of Runner Beans (3), found some Garlic and harvested a few more things, but I filmed those, so you’ll have to wait until the videos come out. That’ll be a job for Mark this weekend. It’s very muggy at the moment, but not sunny which makes it even worse. I also managed to weed more, so I’m slowly plodding through each bed, and getting them sorted. Have a lovely weekend. Apparently we’re supposed to have gales on Monday, which will be fun. Oh and another thing, not very exciting, but I’ve ordered another wheelbarrow wheel. The tyre has shredded, and the inner tube has a puncture in it…£22.85 would have been cheaper to buy a new barrow!
