Dwarf Beans are sown!

Well I wasn’t expecting to get these done today as well as all the other bits and pieces, but I managed. George was on the computer doing homework, and I had a spare hour before I needed to leave to pick up Emily. So not wanting to waste any time I popped to the greenhouse armed with my “Purple Teepee” Dwarf French beans. I’ve grown these ones before, and they did really well. Because they’re a dwarf variety they don’t any staking, and will only grow to about 12 inches tall. Which is perfect if you have either run out of long stick, or want to plant them in a container. They’re very prolific, so be warmed when they get going they produce loads of beans.  I think that’s definitely it for today as far as the allotment and garden are concerned. Time to get cleaned up, and a good sleep to give me loads of energy for tomorrows adventure down the allotment. TTFN xx

Tuesday 6th Mary 2014 – Kale is in!!

All the seedlings in the greenhouse are growing well (all except the Celery), and I’m running out of room. So I was looking to see which plants can go in the ground now and not have to wait until June. The first plants I came across was the Kale. I have 27 strong plants, that were just itching to get out in the big wild world, so today was their special day. I had a bed all prepared for them, which is weed free (for how long is anyones guess) and manure spread  on top. So I have planted them out and hopefully they’ll be happy. When planting out brassicas, make sure that you plant them deeper than they were in the pot. They don’t mind this, and it helps keep them more stable as they grow taller. I then protected them from slugs, and then covered them with some fleece that has seen better days, but will do until I can get some more netting. Poor brassicas get attacked from all angles so look after them otherwise the birds and gastropods will. I also managed to weed a load more, and spread some more manure. One plot is nearly done, and the other plot is half done, so I’m getting there slowly. I did take lunch down to the allotment today as I knew that I would be there for longer than normal. I think it totalled up to about 4 hours worth of digging, which isn’t bad going. Tomorrow’s weather looks good as well, so I’ll do the same, but I think it’s cabbages next to plant out. I’d better get them sorted otherwise I’ll forget them.

Monday 5th May 2014 – Bank Holiday fun.

I’ve been very busy going here and there over the last couple of days, so to finally get a day at home was great. I had loads planned, and gradually worked my way through most of it. As it’s now the beginning of May, then beans can be sown. I sow mine 4 weeks before they’re due to be planted outside. That way they’re about 12 inches tall, at the beginning of June, which is not too large or too small. This year I’m only sowing French Beans and have sown Climbing Bean “Cobra”. I’ve grown these before, and they’ve done really well. I do have another packet of dwarf ones, but they’ll have to wait until tomorrow. As Mark and the kids were having a Nerf war up and down the stairs, I lit the BBQ (first one this year), and I cooked chicken, sausages, homemade burgers and ribs. As it was a little cold for sitting outside we had dinner indoors. We also had potato wedges and salad as well. And to top it all off for pudding we had ice cream sandwiches. A fabulous day was had by all, and after all that food I had a little nap.

Saturday 3rd May 2014 – Naked gardening, Great Tits, and other things!

Now before I start, I want to let you know that there will be NO innuendos in this blog at all. If you find some, then I’ve made a massive booby. Firstly it’s World Naked Gardening day, it’s always the first saturday in May. It’s warmer this year than it was last year, so that’s a good thing.

And here’s my video from last year’s…

Also an update of my pair of Great Tits, they’re growing well, with every day they get larger and larger. My melons are also sprouting, so hopefully I’ll have a lovely pair to show you later on in the season. Also down on the allotment this morning I shovelled some manure with my friend Clair. Hopefully the manure will help all my vegetables and fruit grow well, and I’ll have some long, firm courgettes in the summer. I think that’s all for today. Have a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend. I hope the weather is fine where you are so you can get the BBQ out…….I think I managed that quite well, don’t you?
