Wednesday 14th October 2015 – A whole lotta Carrots.

I only had an hour today up the allotment with one thing and another, but I needed to go up there, just for a bit of sanity. Even in that short time I managed to dig up enough Carrots to keep us going for quite a while. A lovely selection of both purple and orange carrots. I’ll put them in the greenhouse at home to dry out for a while and then I’ll store them in the shed and we’ll use them as and when we need them. So far I’ve only dug up those 2 odd shaped ones that were cuddling each other. All the ones I dug up today varied in size (but then they were different varieties), but were all beautiful and straight and had no extra legs or anything weird about them. And no Carrot fly, which I’m very proud of.

Apart from the odd rogue Potato and a few Onions, everything else is a Carrots.

The Parsnips are growing well, but won’t be up for at least another couple of months. They need a decent frost to sweeten them up first, but don’t mind staying in the ground until February next year. The leaves die back, but the parsnips themselves will be fine under the soil. If you forget where you planted them then just wait until the green shoots start showing in February/March time. I’ve lost mine before, but then found them when this happens. I’ll keep you posted on their progress.

Just the Parsnips are left in this bed. Hope they don't get too lonely.

Sorry it’s so short, but I didn’t have much time. Hopefully I’ll be able to spend much more time playing tomorrow and have something more substantial to tell you. But until then TTFN!!

Tuesday 13th October 2015 – Pumpkins, Potatoes and Poo!!

They talk about the 3 R’s at school, but today I’m talking about the 3 P’s. Which is much more interesting in so many ways. I was hoping to do some filming today on the allotment, but the camera decided to tell me that it had no charge (even though it was charging all night), when I got home it had lots of charge. I’ll try again tomorrow. But even that wasn’t going to put me off doing what I wanted. So first of all I continued turning over more areas of my beds that were finished with, and manured the soil. I got loads done which is always a good feeling. Some of my Sunflowers heads have finished, so I have to prune the old heads off frequently otherwise the parakeets will feast on them, and fling a load of seeds about and I’ll have sunflowers growing everywhere next year. Some of the plants got so heavy that they fell over and even though I tried to stand them up right it just didn’t work.

Popcorn in the background. Not quite ready yet, but hopefully I'll harvest it very soon. Beautifully manured bed in the foreground.

The popcorn in the above photo is still going and I’ve not harvest any yet. The husks are still green so I’ll leave them for a while before I pick them all off. I also picked some more Kale for the chickens. They’ve not had any for a while and the split cabbage that I put in a few days ago has been massacred by them. They were very happy little ladies when I got home.  I then moved on to a bed that had a few small Pumpkins in. I harvested these 3, what weight they are is anyones guess, but I’m not breaking any records with them, not even a personal best. Once I’ve harvested all the Pumpkins, I’ll then make a video and weight them so you can all see. I’ll bring the rest home this week, If I have time tomorrow, but definitely Thursday.

The 3 smallest Pumpkins. There are some larger ones still to bring home. I'll weigh them when I've harvested them all.

Then I dug up more Sarpo Mira Potatoes. I only had time to dig up 3 plants, but even from just those I managed to get a decent haul. I’d better get the potato sacks ready for when I dig up the rest of them. There were quite a few that weighed over 1 pound, so that great, but nothing was heavier than the ones harvested yesterday.

All these potatoes from just 3 plants. I've still got lots more to dig up though.

The weather definitely had a chill in it today. The wind is coming from the East and therefore Russia, so that’s a cold wind. I think it’s supposed to last most of the week, but that’s ok, I just need to put on a few extra layers and I might have to get my scarf out for first thing in the morning soon. Thermal sheets next, oh I love thermal sheets in bed…cozy!! That and Mark, but then that goes without saying.

Monday 12th October 2015 – Some good sized potatoes.

The allotment always cheers you up when you’re feeling rather upset and down, so does my family and my chickens. I was only able to be down the allotment for a very short time this afternoon. I won’t bore you with all the details, but I was hoping to be down for most of the day today, but let’s just say our beautiful car was hurt again, early Sunday morning and we had to wait for a replacement this morning. Our car will be made all better on Wednesday, but then I’ll have to spend a considerable amount of time trying to vac up the glass. The more I think about it the more upset I get, so I’ll stop now.

So with all that happening I went to the allotment this afternoon for a bit of “Happy time”. I managed to dig up 1 cabbage and 1 potato plant before I got a phone call and had to come back home. Still the sizes of potatoes I managed to dig up, from just that one plant made me very happy indeed. They were all very sizeable ones but the 2 largest I’m going to share with you. So here they are in all their glory.

And in the left corner weighing in at 1 lb 7.6 oz!!! Knobbly Spud!!

And in the left corner weighing in at 1 lb 7.6 oz!!! Knobbly Spud!!

No personal best, that was last year and stands at a whopping 1 lb 9.4 oz, but there are still lots more potatoes to harvest, so I may get a new personal best on the potatoes. I’ll let you know.

And in the right corner, weighing in at 1 lb 7.8 oz!!! Oval Spud!!

Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day. I’m planning on spending as much of it as possible at the allotment.

Friday 9th October 2015 – Both my two had an INSET day.

Emily and George are at different schools, so the likelihood of them having an INSET day on the same day are quite remote. However, today they were the same. So after George and I had been doing various chores in the morning, which included getting him another pair of wellingtons as he’s out grown the ones I bought him a year ago, and after a lovely lunch, the kids and I got our wellies and got in the car and drove off to Winkworth Arboretum. We’ve been here many times before, but it’s one of our favourite places to go, so we keep going back. The traffic was rather…annoying…. I think is the best way of discribing it, but we eventually got there. When we arrived, we put on our wellies and got out the car. George then did something very odd. He walked around a puddle?!? I said in a rather confused voice “Um George?” and looked at the puddle. He looked at me firstly thinking he was going to be told off, but I then gestured towards the puddle and he grinned and stood in it. “That’s better,” I said “You’ve got to christen your new boots.” Now that it’s autumn all the leaves are turning and it looks so beautiful at Winkworth.

The trees are turning so beautifully at Winkworth.

The trees are turning so beautifully at Winkworth.

All the various fungus are coming out as well and they’re all sorts of different shapes, sizes and colours. I’ll go for a walk in a couple of weeks, in our local wood and find some more wonderful varieties and make a little film. I just find them fascinating the way they grow anywhere and everywhere. I have no idea on their names, but I’m sure either I’ll find out or someone will tell me.

Some spectacular fungus could be found. Don't pick they're poisonous.

The Arboretum is so large that we managed to find areas that we’ve never found before. There was a lovely wooded area (well obviously, that’s what an Arboretum is). What I mean is a wooden play area full of stumps, and structures that you could climb and play on. It’s great to see the kids playing around on them, and I think they really enjoy being able to still be kids every now and then.

Emily being queen of her domain!!

George spotted a male pheasant in the undergrowth and managed to get with in about 2 metres of it before it saw him and ran away. They’re really beautiful birds with all their “beautiful plumage!!” We walked around for about 2 and a half hours before we made our way back to the car park and home. But I didn’t want messy wellies in the car so the only way to get them clean is to wash them in a puddle. Well they’re wellingtons after all and that’s what they expect.

Splishy splashy, splishy splashy.

A lovely day and a wonderful way to spend and INSET day with the kids. What does INSET stand for?

Challock Chilli Fest – 3rd and 4th October 2015

What a fabulous time I had at the “Challock Chilli Fest” this weekend. It was exhausting, but brilliant fun. I was signing both my books, “Lottie and Dottie Sow Carrots” and “Lottie and Dottie Sow Sunflowers” over the weekend. Serena and Stephen at Victoriana Nursery Gardens are such lovely people and their 2 daughters are amazing as well. There were loads of different stalls selling so many wonderful items. The Saturday started very foggy, but it finally cleared and the sun came out. The Sunday was glorious all day and even Elvis turned up and did some singing. I sold and signed loads of books which was great fun. Had wonderful chats with all sorts of people, some very accomplished gardeners and others just starting out on their gardening adventure. I also met several people who already follow me on my channel or blog which was brilliant. A fantastic weekend was definitely had by me and hope by everyone who turned up. Looking forward to next year, that’s assuming they do it again, but I expect they will.

Friday 2nd October 2015 – Good old Sarpo Mira!!

I spent just a couple of hours on my plot today harvesting all sorts of goodies that I needed to take with me to the “Challock Chilli Festival” this weekend. I was pootling along quite happily and harvesting various items from Squashes, Radish, Tomatoes, Rhubarb, Cauliflower, Peppers, Cabbage, Beetroot, Sunflowers and Carrots. I then came to harvesting just 1 Sarpo Mira potato plant. Now why is it that when you harvest something that you are totally amazed by that no one else is around to share that joy with you? From just that one plant I managed to dig up a bunch of potatoes, weighing a total of 8lb 2.8oz!! The two heaviest ones weighed exactly the same at 1lb 4.3 oz each. I did mashed potato for 6 of us and then took the remaining potatoes with me to the Chilli Festival. I hope the rest of the Sarpo deliver the same amount of surprise as this one did, but I’ll keep you informed when I harvest them, which will be in the next couple of weeks I would imagine. I’ll do a video of me harvest some and hopefully I’ll dig up some massive ones so you to share my joy with me. But that was about it for today.

Wednesday 30th September 2015 – And so it continues.

I only had a couple of hours on my allotment this morning, which was a bit of a shame, but I made the most of what little time I had. I carried on with weeding from where I’d left off yesterday and managed to finish weeding another bed. It’s a rather large bed so I was very please to get it all done. I then spread a bit of manure on that bed before I had to go.

Another bed all clear, just several loads of manure to go now.

Another bed all cleared, just a bit more manure and it’s done.

I also managed to get my petrol strimmer working. I’ve not used it all season, why I don’t really know but I’ve been using my hand sheers, but the handle keeps on falling off (Santa is bringing me some new ones) so I got the strimmer working. It took a little bit of coaxing and sweet talking on my part to finally get it going again, but once it was going it was very happy. I now need to get some more fuel because I’ve just used the last of it. I’ll stand in line at the fuel station and wait my turn. Just before I left I went to pick some more Kale for the chickens. They need a little treat every day because they are really special and I like to spoil them. So not really much to tell you today, I’m sorry about that. All a bit boring when it comes to weeding. Hopefully something a bit more interesting soon.

Some people get a bunch of flowers, but my chickens get a bunch of Kale.

Tuesday 29th September 2015 – Continuing with the tidying up.

It’s a little easier to work through various beds now that certain vegetables are ready to come up. I turned over a bed where the Onion, Garlic and Carrots were growing. My Onions started off brilliantly, but then went a bit crap. I’ve not had anything decent from them at all this year. Why this is I don’t know, but I did exactly the same as I usually do, so I guess it’s just one of those things. Still other things have done brilliantly, so I’m not going to complain. I finished turing over and weeding the bed that I’d started yesterday, and then I manured it with 2 barrow loads. I just put the manure on the top of the soil and over the winter the worms will take it down and do all the hard work for me. Once Spring comes I’ll just give it a quick turn over again before sowing. I then moved onto the next bed where some more Rhubarb grows. I’ve now harvested the last of this and will stew it up with some ginger. This bed is quite large but I still managed to get a substantial amount dug and weeded so that was good. Just before I left I went and harvested some more Kale for the chickens. I forgot to bring them anything home yesterday and they were a bit miffed. They love Kale, so hopefully they’ll forgive my forgetfulness from yesterday.

That's 1 bed down, but lots more to go.

Monday 28th September 2015 – Carrots galore!!

Another gorgeous day today. Apparently we’re in for a couple of weeks of what they like to call “An Indian Summer”. Not sure why they call it that. If it happens at any other time of the year they just call it “A Sunny Few Days”. Anyway, I won’t knock it while it’s here, what ever people call it. I spent about 3 and a half hours on my plot today which was great fun. I harvested a load of Carrots (Lottie and Dottie would be very proud), some orange and others purple. I was getting a little disappointed as I was pulling up my Carrots because they were all lovely and straight. This doesn’t usually happen. One year I managed to get some wonderfully bizarre shaped Carrots. Clearly I’ve done something terribly wrong this year, don’t worry I’ll try not to repeat it next year. So there I was pulling away, and because the soil was damp and soft they were coming up very easily. Then suddenly I tried to pull one up and it wouldn’t come up. I got very excited because I was hoping for a “Claire’s Allotment shaped” carrots. Sure enough, up it came cuddling with another carrot. I think if I’d left them in any longer they may have had carrot babies.

A very romantic pair of Carrots. When I pulled these up I felt like s Gooseberry.

A very romantic pair of Carrots. When I pulled these up I felt like s Gooseberry.

I then harvested some lovely colourful Radish. and again some were rather odd in shape. Some has split due to a load of rain that had fallen a couple of weeks ago, and others were fine. They range from purple, red, pink, orange, yellow and white, so they’ll look wonderful in  a salad. Then I spent the rest of the time weeding another bed. I’ve got about half way through it, but will continue tomorrow. There are a few bits and pieces to harvest, but nothing major. So all in all a good load of carrots harvested today, this should keep us going for a little while, and in a couple of weeks time I’ll check the rest of the carrots and harvest some more.

Todays harvest. Loads of Carrots an a few Radish on the side.

Oh and the Pumpkins are growing well, but you’ll have to wait for a bit to see those!!
