Tuesday 2rd April 2013 – What a lovely day!

Sorry if it’s been overcast where you live, but today in the SE of England it was glorious! It got to the dizzy heights of about 7 or 8 degrees, and I didn’t need to wear my body warmer in the garden this afternoon. I had a packed day, starting off with the first mow of the lawn which is wonderful, then I made doughnuts from that wonderful book again and triple chocolate cookies which is my very own recipe. Then in the garden this afternoon to sow the rest of the March seeds. I know it’s April, but never mind. The garden is starting to look more cheerful, and the greenhouse is getting full now. I need to get the onions and garlic in the ground, hopefully the soil would have warmed up enough for the onions to go in mid April. Not wanting to be halted by the cold weather I ploughed on, so this afternoon I sowed the following: Onions from seed “Bedfordshire Champion“, Leek “Below Zero“, Celery “Sigfrido“, Sweetcorn “Britpop popcorn“, Sweet peppers “Rainbow Blend“, Kohl Rabi “Green and Giant“, Melon “Ogen” and some from Daniel and Chuck Fenster in the States “Ambrosia Cantaloupe”, Chick peas (from Spain, but I’m sure you can find some where you are) and finally Electric Daisies. That’s all for today folks! Meat loaf is in the oven, and a glass of wine is calling my name.

Monday 1st April 2013 – Need a bun pad!

Just to say this isn’t an April fools joke, just incase you’re wondering. I was up to allotment this morning planting more potatoes “Blue Belle” and the first half of my “King Edwards“. I had my lovely new knee pads on to protect my knees (lovely they are, but not clean anymore). When I sat down on the grass got a wet bottom and realised I also needed a bum pad to protect my delicate behind. Does anyone know where I can get one from? Maybe I should be padded like the Michelin man, then I’d be well protected. Hope you all had a great Chocolate day or Easter sunday to the rest of you. Don’t eat too much in 1 go, but then you can burn it off when gardening.

Bun recipe and photo

As many of you have asked for the recipe and a photo of my magnificent Hot cross buns here it is.

Yummy buns!!

Yummy buns!!

It’s from the book “Bread” but as you’ll notices I have no crosses on mine, as I couldn’t be bothered, so really they’re spicy buns or Dawkins buns as we’ve named them. Give them a go, and remember they’re not just for Easter. Pop the following ingredients in the bread machine pan: 7.5 floz of cold milk, 1lb of bread flour, 1.5 tsp mixed spice, .5tsp of ground cinnamon, .5tsp salt, 2oz sugar, 2oz butter, 1.5tsp yeast, 5oz mixed dried fruit. Put the bread machine on the dough cycle, and when it’s finished knock back and make into 12 balls. Leave to prove for about 1hr and then bake for 15-18 mins on gas 6. Yummy.

Thursday 28th March 2013 – Hot cross Buns!

Well I’ve made mine this year. I think the supermarket ones are very nice, but you know me, homemade is better. They’re proving on the top of the bread machine as we speak, I’ll give them another 30 minutes and then put them in the over. Here’s a question – How long will my 12 hot cross buns last? Not long is the answer. Hopefully they’ll be some left for breakfast.

Sunday 24th March 2013 – Really it’s March and not January?

Can anyone explain what on earth is going on with the weather this year? I suppose I shouldn’t complain as we’ve not got any snow. We had a sprinkling yesterday and we kept getting a few flurries today, but it’s still so, so cold! I do feel sorry for those living in Yorkshire, I saw the arial footage this morning on the news channel and power has gone for many in Northern Ireland. So I suppose we’re very lucky. Anyway, moan over I’ve just got in from the greenhouse (fingers are still defrosting as I type) I ordered some plants a couple of weeks ago from J Parker’s, and I was sorting them out. I now have some plants that I hope will be happy in my hanging baskets they’re a selection of 12 Ground Cover Perennials, 15 each of Crocosmia Lucifer and Sunglow, 1 Virginia Creeper and 50 free Mixed Freesias. I’ll find some lovely homes for them in the garden in the coming months, but now I’m in for the evening. I still have more seeds to sow this month, but as it’s so cold I will leave them for a little while.
