Tuesday 12th April 2016 – Another glorious morning on the allotment.

The weather presenters keep telling us we’re going to have loads of rain, and it just doesn’t seem to happen. Maybe we live in our own little mini climate, who knows. It got up to 17 degrees today which is practically a heat wave for us!! So once I got to the allotment, (a little later that planned due to the fact that my car was blocked in by a lorry!) I got straight to work. Firstly I planted out the Broad Beans “Bunyards Exhibition” that I sowed in 3 inch pots a couple of months ago. They’ve grown really well in the greenhouse, and hopefully they’ll continue to grow well now they’re out in the big wide world. I then planted out 2 trays of my Sarpo Mira Potatoes. I still have another 2 trays to do, but will get them in by the end of the week. After a couple of hours it was time to come home. The sun is still shining, so I hope to get out the garden later this afternoon to get a few bits done.

oh how I love your blog 🙂 We have had our allotment for about 10 years now but to be honest I have never been that green fingered, my other half is normally the ‘instructor’. However last year I finally took to growing all the seeds, but it soon got quite out of hand in the greenhouse! We are very late starting this year, but I am closely following your blog to see what you are planting next, I particularly love your videos, the information sinks in better than reading a book.

I have only planted sweet peas, tomatoes and salad seeds so far, we both work full time and our allotment is ten minutes away in the car.

Can I ask if you work full time, and if you’re allotment is nearby? I see you have a greenhouse in your garden which must be great! Ours is at the plot as our garden is too small 😦

  It’s amazing how time flies when you have an allotment. I’m on my 11th season, and it’s just flown by. People have come and gone, but others are still there. I’m the green fingered one, but my husband is not, in any way, shape or form. But he’ll eat anything I grow, which i all I ask. I’m so glad you find my videos helpful. Sometimes seeing something done is much easier to understand than reading it, you’re quite right. I work part time, but always have the school holidays off, which is great. Some terms are busier than others, and some weeks are manic, where as others are very calm. I do Theatre in Education so it just varies. The summer term is usually the quietest, but that’s fine with me because I’m on the allotment. I can walk to my allotment in 10 minutes, but usually take the car because I have things to carry, but if I do have to walk I travel light. Have a great season.

    Yes it goes very quickly! We popped by yesterday after work and realised that some of the weeds were coming up really easily, just over an hour later and we had managed to pull up rather a lot so we were very pleased!
    
    However we had stupidly left in our parsnips (and leeks) so have some gigantic parsnips to deal with, about 60 (!) leeks some of them thin some of them huge! and still got several squashes hanging up in the garage which are starting to go mouldy on top so I need to get super busy in the kitchen!
    
    Oh how lovely to get the school holidays off, I have been eyeing up school jobs for quite sometime as to be able to have a long break during the summer would be great for me to be able to get stuff done, weather permitting of course!
    
    We have walked to our plot before when we were car less for a few months, took about an hour but we managed, and if we were lucky someone gave us a lift back!

Claire, I planted my potatoes yesterday. They were from last year’s crop so I’m hoping they will do well. I see that your planning is similar to mine. I do have a very loose plan when I start the year but I will tell anyone that asks that the plan is only a guide and isn’t finished until all the seeds and plants are in the ground. 🙂 I’m one that changes plans as I go along.

  Hopefully they should do well. Plan, what’s a plan? I never use one really. But it all works out in the end. Plans are there to be changed, and I generally just make it up as I go along. Have a great time planting.
