Sunday 7th June 2015 – Sunday on the allotment.

Now I don’t usually go to the allotment at the week end, but I’ve just been so busy with one thing and another, and the weather was just so wonderful that I managed to scrounge a few hours to myself. Now that June is hear all the tender plants can now start to go outside. So today I managed to plant out the rest of my Kohl Rabi, the ones that I left on the garden table the other day. Plant out my Cabbage, both varieties “Primo” and “All year round Blend”. Get some more Peas in, which I put so they can climb up another wigwam. Plant out 2 lovely rows of Leeks, I use a broom handle to make approximately a 6 inch hole in the soil first before I put the leek seedling in the hole, then fill the hole up with water. I know it’s weird, but that’s the way to plant out leeks.  I then got ready my bean poles for my Climbing French Beans that I’m hoping to get out very soon. They’re growing well, and are just about the right size to go outside, but it’s finding the time. Hopefully I’ll get them out this coming week. And finally to help attract the bees to the bean flowers I planted some Nasturtium plants underneath the bean poles.

Nasturtiums under the bean poles to attract the bees to the beans. Try saying that fast.

Then it was the obligatory weeding and cutting of grass. It’s all gone a bit mad at the moment, I was away from my plot for about 3 weeks, and some parts of it look a bit abandoned. I’ll get it sorted out in a couple of weeks….hopefully. Then just as I was about to leave I noticed that some of my strawberries were ready to be picked. I had to try one first to see, and oh my……the one I tried was so warm and so sweet. Perfect!! I picked enough for us to have for pudding that evening. I’ll have more to harvest in a couple of days and then I’ll have to start making some jam I suppose.

Fresh strawberries warmed by the sun. There is nothing more delicious.

Saturday 6th June 2015 – Family trip to London.

Today we were having a family trip up to the “Big City”. Mark works in London so goes up every day, but the kids and I don’t go up much. If we ever comment on something like the traffic or all the people, Mark calls us “Country Bumpkins”. We arrived in London just before lunch time and went for a gentle stroll round Regents Park. If you’ve not been, it’s very beautiful and the Rose Garden is gorgeous. I think my favourite name for one rose was “Radox Bouquet” and yes it did smell exactly like Radox bath salts!!

Honestly, it really smelt like Radox bath salts!!

Honestly, it really smelt like Radox bath salts!!

There is a very serene large lake which had black swans on it and loads of ducks and geese swimming about. The male pigeons were getting a little frisky, but the females weren’t impressed. There is also an allotment garden, but was only opened on week days so I was unable to go in and have a nose round. Still you could view it from the road side. And it had one hell of a scary scarecrow standing and staring at you. It clearly was doing it’s job as there were no birds in sight.

What a lovely looking vegetable patch. Perfect in every way.

What a lovely looking vegetable patch. Perfect in every way.

We then found a lovely place to have lunch in the park and we all had a huge cumberland sausage in a brioche roll with onions, it was very tasty. Once we’d eaten and drunk we then walked off to Madam Tussauds. Our entry time was 2pm-2.15pm and we couldn’t be late. Now Mark has been before, but when he was about 11 years old I think, but the kids and I have never been. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I thought it would be a dark room that would walk through and can only look at the wax works, but it’s not. You can go and stand by them and have your photo taken right next to them. Some are incredibly well done like Tom Cruise and they even have his tooth in the middle. He’s very short though!! Others like Tom Hanks were a bit…eh. Looked sort of like him about 20 years ago, but not a very good likeness. George had fun posing by loads of them, and Emily took loads of photos. We all went round sometimes separately and sometimes together. It was like walking down the red carpet with all these A list celebrities. I had a quick sneak peak up Sean Connery’s kilt (didn’t see much) and sat on the sofa with George Clooney, even made of wax he’s….WOW!!

A George either side of me. Aren't I a lucky girl!!

A George either side of me. Aren’t I a lucky girl!!

You went from room to room, and Emily was very excited when she saw Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, and George nearly fainted when he saw Arnie as The Terminator. There were loads of sports personalities, most I knew, and others I had no idea who they were (mainly footballers). Mark had a script con-flab with Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare, and tried to work out what “n” was worth with Albert Einstein (it’s 10!). George chatted on President Obama’s phone in the Oval Office and we posed with Churchill. Oh, and I had my photo taken with the royal family. They were very obliging and friendly.

Don't worry Albert, he'll get the answer soon ...I hope!

Don’t worry Albert, he’ll get the answer soon …I hope!

It was then on to a little ride they called “The Spirit of London Ride”. This took you through the Queen Elizabeths the I’s reign, and included the plague and that part smelt horrible. This was a Claire friendly ride with a gentle turning of your cab from one side to the other. Then it was onto Emily’s favourite part “The Marvel Superhero” section. They posed with Hawk Eye, Nick Fury, Wolverine and so many others (I hope you’re impressed I know the characters names?). There was then a 4D film to watch. This again is Claire Friendly. The seats vibrate (which is always good), and you put on those 3D glasses so the screen comes out at you, and then obviously you get a bit wet. It’s just like being back in Florida again!!

Avengers Assemble!!

Avengers Assemble!!

Then it was on to Mark’s Favourite bit and to be honest the only reason why we came. STAR WARS!!! He’s a massive fan of Star Wars (episodes 4, 5 and 6 of course. 1, 2 and 3 take them or leave them). Mark tried to calm down a light sabre fight, fly the Millennium Falcon, and stretch out to Darth Vader. We also all sat with Jabba the Hutt and Princess Leia (in the gold bikini of course).

I bet she gets a bit chilly.

I bet she gets a bit chilly.

We then went back to Regents park to have an over priced ice cream and George got to play in the play ground for a bit, and then it was on to see where Sherlock Holmes lived (221B Baker Street for those of you who don’t know). It’s just a house, but is a magnet for tourists. The kids then wanted to pop along to Hamleys. We started at the top and worked down, which is the best way of doing it. We didn’t use the lift to get to the top floor but instead walked all the way up to the 5th floor. It was much quicker than the lift any way and we got some exercise as well. None of us bought anything, but we all got to play with various toys. I tried out a remote control Minion. But I’m not very good with them, and crashed it into a ladies legs. It didn’t hurt, but I apologied and then gave it back to George. George met Her Majesty in Lego and bowed like a gentleman, I drove a fake tube train (they wouldn’t let me drive a real one!) And George then put something on his face. It’s best not to ask!!

DON'T ask!! I don't.....ever!

DON’T ask!! I don’t…..ever!

Then it was time to catch the train home and have fish and chips for dinner. A wonderful day full of new experiences. We were all very tired and all went to bed nice and early.

Friday 5th June 2015 – Flash!! Bang!!! Wallop!!!!…Then Sun?

Well that was how today started off. At 5.10am I awoke from such a lovely sleep to the sound of a faint rumble of thunder. My ears are tuned to various noises, our two children and thunder however faint. There were a couple of faint rumbles in the distance, nothing loud. So I turned over and tried to go back to sleep. These faint rumbles had not disturbed anyone else in the house, just me. Then at 5.30am there was the most almighty flash followed by a huge and very long bang! Mark and Emily woke at this point, both with a bit of a start. More followed for about 30 minutes before it finally rumbled off into the distance. Not only did we have the thunder and lightning, but also some torrential rain. In all our bedrooms the small windows were open so you could hear everything outside. Emily was then up (she gets up early as she wants to watch her favourite programme on the TV before the rest of us get up. At the moment it American Horror Story). Mark and I went back to sleep until our alarm went off at 7am. We then got up and I went to wake up George. Now if you were concentrating when you read the beginning of this blog then you may have realised that I never mention George’s reaction to the storm. There is a reason for that. He managed to sleep through the entire thing!! How this was possible I don’t know, but he’s done this before. He must completely shut down when he goes to sleep. I don’t even think he’d wake up if a comet the size of the one that killed the dinosaurs crashed into earth!! So he was a bit miffed that he’d missed it, he likes a good storm. They threatened more of the same weather all morning, so I decided that going to the allotment wouldn’t be a good idea. In fact we only had a very small amount of rain so I would have been ok. But I’ve been up the allotment when a storm has started and it’s not much fun. So after lunch the clouds cleared and the sun came out and it was a lovely afternoon, so I went in the greenhouse to do some potting on and sorting out. I potted on various varieties of Tomato, “Black Prince” which I have 9 plants for myself and 2 for my sister, “Banana Leggs” I have 5 plants. Then the Spanish Cucumbers, only 2 have germinated, but hopefully they’ll produce enough fruits for us. And finally some of the Sunflowers. I potted up 4 “Russian Giant”, 6 “Pacino Gold”, 4 “Teddy Bear”. 5 “Colour Parade” and 9 “Red Sun”. The “Italian White” are still too small to pot on yet so I’ll give them a little longer. Once that was done my friend Sally popped over and we had a chat, then Elaine came to buy some more eggs and then my sister popped over. What a busy afternoon. Then it was dinner and a sit down after all that excitement.

Thursday 4th June 2015 – Size isn’t everything you know….well sometimes it is!

Now I know that size IS important to many people, you know who you are! But for me, with most things it doesn’t matter. That is except when it comes to my fruit and vegetables and then size really DOES matter! I’ve not been on my plot for about 3 weeks now. Yes I know that’s awful, but I wasn’t well (this took a couple of weeks to finally go, I’m better now), then we were away for a few days in the half term, then it poured with rain, and then I was working!! Phew!! My plots look like I’ve abandoned them, but don’t worry I’ll soon get them back into shape. I had a fun 3 hours this morning planted out various plants. I was very please with myself as all the ones I put in the boot of the car I managed to do. Firstly it was the Kohl Rabi. These are starting to swell up at the base of the plant which is a good sign that they’re growing well. Hopefully they’ll be happy in their new home on the allotment. They shouldn’t need covering with netting, but if you are worried please do. They’ll also need protecting from our favourite gastropods as well.

Kohl Rabi, grow my pretties!!

Kohl Rabi, grow my pretties!! And some peas.

Once these were all in (well all the ones I took with me. When I got home I found that I’d left some on the table) I then planted out the Peas. I’ve got various varieties growing at different stages so that hopefully we have a constant supply over the summer. Well that’s the plan anyway. I have put them in up against a wigwam construction so they will hopefully climb up the canes and be happy. Then it was time to get the Butternut Squash in. I had 9 plants, so have put 5 in one bed and 4 in a other. They don’t mind being separated around the allotment, but they’re great to fill in any gaps. Plant them at least 2 feet apart if you can as they need space to trail and grow. They did really well last year, so hopefully they’ll do even better this year. And again protect from our slimy friends.

That's 5 Butternut in this bed, and 4 in another bed.

That’s 5 Butternut in this bed, and 4 in another bed.

And the last lot of plants I took down were my Kale. This always does well and is a good source or iron, which is something that I lack sometimes and can’t give blood. Still never mind. I have 10 Kale plants, so planted 2 rows of 5. Make sure that you protect these from our slimy friends and also from the doves from above. If you don’t, then they’ll decimate your plants in a matter of hours!

Kale which is protected from below and above.

Then just before I left to come home I noticed that my Rhubarb needed to be harvested. Now I don’t know what I’ve done, maybe it’s the manure, or the seaweed fertiliser, but it’s grown really, really large!! I bought 4 stems home so I could show you and measure. The longest leaf was 30 inches long and the Rhubarb stem was 17 inches long, 2 inches wide and 1.5 inches deep!! I bought 4 home and the total length of them would only just fit in the width of our car boot!! I’ll have to make some pies and crumbles, and give some away to friends. I’ve never know it grow that big before. Still size isn’t everything, but when it comes to Rhubarb it really is!!

Mammoth sized Rhubarb. The leaves are the size of elephants ears!!

Saturday 30th May 2015 – It’s time for a jiggle!

Now is the time to prepare getting your tender plants ready to go outside in the big wide world (do check when your last frost date is though). So I’ve spent much of the afternoon moving various plants from the safety of the greenhouse to the garden table in preparation for them to be taken down to the allotment to their final resting place. I do it this way, then it’s a gentle move for them and they don’t get too stressed and freak out. Yes plants do get stressed and freak out it’s a well known fact (discovered by me). So out on the garden table in nice sturdy containers so I can move them easily are various brassicas including: Kale, Sprouting Broccoli, Cabbage, Kohl Rabi, Cauliflower and Brussels Sprouts. I also have some Squash, Nasturtiums and Peas and possibly a few other bits an pieces. There was a lot of going back and forth and confusing the chickens. Every time I walk past them, they seem to think I’m going to feed them!! They’re very greedy little hens. So you can see I’ve got a lot to put in the allotment in the next couple of weeks.

All ready for the allotment!!

All ready for the allotment!!

Now that there’s more room in the greenhouse I was able to pot on 4 more of the Basil seedlings. These have grown quite considerably in the last 2 weeks. There are still some more to come, but I’ll wait for another couple of weeks and hopefully they’ll be large enough. I now have 5 small Basil plants so hopefully will get enough for some pesto!! I then potted on some of my Ambrosia Cantaloupe Melon seedlings into 3 inch pots. 8 seeds sprouted so hopefully they’ll grow well and I’ll get some fruit off them later in the summer. I’ll keep them in the greenhouse as they don’t grow well outside in the UK as it’s too cold. I have reserved some of the Nasturtium plants for the allotment because they’ll be great to grow near the beans because they’ll attract the pollinators, but I did sow some in the garden in hanging baskets. I’ve got some little sections in the fence that need a bit of coverage so hopefully these holes will get filled in. As with anything growing in a hanging basket it needs to be watered very frequently especially in the summer as they dry out quickly. Now the greenhouse looks less full, but will soon fill up again as the plants grow bigger. In the end I only want my Tomatoes, Melons, Okra and Aubergines in the greenhouse and everything else should be outside. I’ve got a lot of work to still do but hopefully I’ll get it all done in time. I’ve also been sorting out the shed and if any pots are either too small or broken they’re going straight in the bin. I’ve got so many at the moment. Having a good sort out is always rewarding. And finally I wanted to see how my Radishes were doing in my Salad bed. Very well is the answer. I harvested 4 lovely large and colourful ones.

Lovely crisp, fresh radishes....including dirt!!

Lovely crisp, fresh radishes….including dirt!!

Well I think that’s it for today, tomorrow look like it’s supposed to pour all day so I may get chance to hide in the greenhouse at some point, but we’ll see. As long as we don’t have any thunder and lightning strikes about 2 miles away like we had the other day then I’ll be ok.

26th – 28th May 2015 – A few days away in Whitstable.

We’ve never been away in half term before, we usually only have one holiday a year and that’s in the summer. But as this year we’re not having a summer holiday because we’re so busy, we popped down to the seaside for a couple of days during half term. Friends of ours have a little flat in Whitstable and very kindly said that we could use it. The kids had to share a sofa bed, which Emily found a little tricky because George fidgets so much in bed, that she opted to sleep, instead, on the recliner chair. Still it all worked out well in the end. The drive down was very pleasant once we’d got out of the town where we live. What idiot decided to have 3 sets of road works on the main routes out of town right next to each other? It caused chaos on a major roundabout. Still once we’d got past that it was plain sailing, even on the M25!! We got to Whitstable around lunch time and once we’d unpacked (not much as it was only 3 days) we went for a walk along the beach which is rather stoney but has some sand when the tide is out. We had to take the obligatory family selfie.

The Stay family have arrived in Whitstable!!

The Stay family have arrived in Whitstable!!

It only takes 5 minutes to walk form where we were staying to the beach, it’s not far at all. There are loads of fish restaurants selling locally caught produce, and loads of oysters. Now I’m sure they taste great, but I’m just not keen on trying them. I think it’s the fact that they’re raw and rather slimy. I wished one man who was opening them, was wearing a glove, but he must know what he was doing. For lunch Emily and I shared half a lobster and chips and the boys had cod and chips. The lobster was gorgeous and you get very messy eating it, but boy was it worth it!

Lunch by the sea. Very delicious!

After lunch we went for a gentle stroll along the beach. The tide was way out and the sea was calm. The kids rolled up their trousers and took off their shoes and went for a paddle. It’s the North Sea at Whitstable, I’m used to something warmer like the Med, so I didn’t go in. We came up to one section of beach and it was littered with crab shells, fish heads, mussel shells and fish skeletons. It was like a sea massacre had happened. Our two being intrigued by this sort of stuff went and explored and picked up various things and flipped over the fish heads (don’t worry they washed their hands afterwards). Emily was fascinated by the insides of a lobster head and then found a tail. She keeps complaining that they don’t get to dissect anything at school.

Emily's little treasures.

Emily’s little treasures.

George on the other hand just likes to find the grossest things imaginable. But then he’s a boy, and as I keep telling myself “That’s what boys do!” Lots of other kids were very squeamish when they saw the fish heads and other gross things and some parents wouldn’t let them touch anything. Still each to their own.

Explorer George, what gross things will he find?

Once hands were washed very thoroughly we went off to get an ice cream. We got ours from Mr and Mrs Whippy, who were this elderly couple in an ice cream van. They were so very sweet and polite and helpful. We then walked through part of the town on our way back to our holiday home and walked past a lovely little greengrocer called “Staines Farm Shop”. I was very impressed by their display of a majority of local produce, but especially their Heritage Tomatoes.

A very impressive selection of Heritage Tomatoes.

And then to top it all off they sold Tomatillos…which I’m growing this year. I’ve never seen these in any other shop before. I think the lady thought I was a little odd getting really excited about them, and then taking some photos.

Tomatillos for sale. You won't find them on sale where I live.

Whitstable town is very beautiful with some very old fashioned shops, all very individual, but no massive supermarkets which is wonderful. It’s what I would call a perfect little seaside town. Everyone is polite and friendly, I think I could live their quite happily. Mark and I did look at “House Porn” as we call it. We saw a wonderful place just slightly more inland and not far up the road. 5 bedrooms and on about 7 acres!! It was the same price as a 4 bedroom house with a tiny garden round were we live. If the kids didn’t have to stay at their schools because of exams….well we can always dream. Mark and I did fantasise about what our days would be like, it was lovely. But now back to the real world. We then all had a little nap (well we’re on holiday after all) and then went out again in the evening to find somewhere to eat for dinner. I was quite happy to cook, but I wasn’t allowed to. I wasn’t going to argue. We found a lovely restaurant called Birdies, which was lovely unpretentious food. Excellent service and very friendly. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone. After another stroll along the beach and all of us trying to throw stones into the sea as far as we could, (George and Mark are great at that, Emily is good and I’m pants at it) we walked back home and were all in bed by 10pm exhausted!!

For breakfast the following morning, Mark and I popped down to the local Hubbards Bakery which is about a 2 minute walk away and got some croissants for breakfast. We then walked along the other part of town that we’d not seen and saw the Whitstable library. I wanted to go in and see if they had either of my books, but Mark said they most probably wouldn’t but we can always have a look just incase. I found the children’s section and sure enough they had “L&D sow Carrots”. “Sunflowers” must have been out on load. I was a very happy bunny.

Look what I found in Whitstable Library!!

Look what I found in Whitstable Library!!

We walked along more beach before we stopped for lunch, which was more fish, but this time in a different place. Mark and I had Scampi and the kids had Prawns, all with chips of course. Now I do like beer or lager, so at any opportunity I would have to try out the local ale. I can thoroughly recommend the Whitstable Bay Pale Ale. Very tasty!! After another late afternoon nap we went and had dinner at The Tapas. We got a variety of dishes that we all shared. All were very scrumptious, and we even managed pudding this time. After a late night walk along the beach it was time to head back home for bedtime. We did start to watch “The Thing” but didn’t get far as we were all very tired. I’m sure we’ll watch the rest another time, it’ a bit gross, but the kids, especially Emily enjoyed what she saw.

After more croissants for breakfast on our last day we went for another wander around the shops. The kids wanted to buy a few last minute bits and pieces so we visited The Sugar Boy Sweet shop, The Cheese Box where Emily and I tried some cheeses before we bought them, The Offy for some Whitstable Ale and Wine for our neighbours who looked after the chickens whilst we were away. Once we’d shopped, we then packed everything in the car and drove off to Herne Bay. It’s not on the way home, but is only a few miles up the road. The reason for going here is because way back on 11th September 1971 my parents got married and had their honeymoon in Herne Bay. I wondered if The Hotel St George they stayed in was still there. Dad had emailled me where it was, so we parked and had already looked up the hotel on line so had an address to go by as well. Sadly the hotel is no longer a hotel, but had been made into flats. It was closed in 2003 and then demolished in 2006.

Where it all began for Mr and Mrs Burgess!!

Where it all began for Mr and Mrs Burgess!!

We then walked down into the town and found a lovely restaurant to have dinner in. Again they were wonderful, and the food was amazing.  We found a plaque on the wall telling you about “Famous Faces” from the area. Some are well know like Bob Holness and Ken Russell, but I really think they’re scraping the barrel at the chap who always played Father Christmas each year. Still I’m sure he’s very important to them, so who am I to criticise.

Very important people from Herne Bay!!

Very important people from Herne Bay!!

We walked out onto the Herne Bay Pier which used to be over a kilo meter long apparently, but a huge section of it got destroyed by a storm in 1978 and then they took a load of the damaged section away. The end section is still standing way out to sea although you can only get to it by boat. George wanted to go on the Helter Skelter, which once you’ve gone on the rides at Disney it’s really a bit boring. Still he enjoyed himself.

George enjoying the Helter Skelter. In the background you can ee the end of the old pier.

We then found a lovely spot on the rather stoney beach to sit and relax. They kids played in the sea, the breeze was slight, and the sun shone. By the time 3pm came we were all ready to leave so we visited the facilities that didn’t have hot water, soap or drying facilities (not very impressed) and then drove home. The traffic was again minimal, even the M25 which was rather bizarre, and we only got stuck about a mile or so from home. We arrived home just after 4.30pm. Even though it was only 3 days away it felt much longer. We all feel refreshed and ready to battle anything now. There’s still a few more day until the kids go back to school and me work, but having that little break away has done us wonders.
