Proper Seville Orange Marmalade.

I’ve made this a few times now and each year it gets better and better. Now I love Marmalade and Jam, especially on toast or crumpets for breakfast (who doesn’t like a bit of crumpet?) Shop bought marmalade and jam is either cheap and awful, or the really good stuff is really expensive. To make your own doesn’t take much and you don’t need any specialist equipment, a large sauce pan will do. Also it’s very cheap to make, so if you fancy giving it a go, do, you’ll be hooked. Recipes are very easy to find either on line or in recipe books. Borrow one from the library, to give you an idea of what to do. But I’ve just made this years Marmalade. I made 2 batches, and this is the time to make it, because it’s the only time Seville Oranges (sometimes called Bitter Oranges) are available. You tend not to be able to find them in a supermarket, but if you have a local greengrocers ask if they can get some for you. We don’t have a local greengrocers, so I got mine from our towns outdoor weekly market, which is just the same. They have all sorts for sale and at very reasonable prices. I use Delia Smith’s Marmalade Recipe which works perfect every time. Use the same method as Delia suggests, but I used 2lbs Seville oranges, 4 pints water, 1 lemon, 4lbs granulated sugar and a half teaspoon of butter. This is what happens when you have a really old copy that was printed in the mid 90’s and then we go to metric weights and measures.

The house smells wonderful when you’re making marmalade, even the kids commented on it, which is a good sign. I made one batch one day and the other batch the following day. I’m pleased to report that I have 11 jar of marmalade to keep us going for the rest of the year. Hopefully that’ll be enough. It doesn’t matter what shapes and sizes your jars are. Ask friends and family to save their old jars for you. Just don’t use old pickled onion jars, even the dishwasher can’t get rid of the onion flavour.

My 11 jars of loveliness.

I have made some videos you could watch. Part 1 – Getting started, Part 2 – Pulp & Rind, Part 3 – Sugar … lots of sugar, Part 4 – The Crinkle Test and Part 5 – Cooling and Potting Up.

I hope you give it a go, but be quick, Seville Oranges are only available for about 3 weeks of the year, so get them as soon a s possible.

Wednesday 27th January 2016 – Giving the Garlic a head start.

This morning was the time for the Garlic to be started off. I got it this year from Homebase, but you can get it from any garden centre or online. There is so much to choose from. There are 2 planting times, Autumn and Spring. Now is the time to start your Spring planting Garlic. Homebase don’t have much variety, only 2 varieties, “Casablanca” and “Early Purple Wight”. Still I was in there at the time and saw it so bought some. There were a couple of mouldy cloves, but then you do expect to find a couple. I’ve started them off in half toilet rolls and they’ll be living in my greenhouse until at least the beginning of March (depending on the weather) until the time when I need to move them outside into the allotment. Starting them off in this way means that they’re more likely to grow better when they’re put in the allotment and will hopefully have good root systems on them and some lovely sturdy shoots. Once I’d sorted them all out, I have 38 cloves growing, so hopefully that’ll keep us going for a while next year.

Tuesday 26th January 2016 – Lots of Onions and some very cheap Garlic!!

This morning I popped to Homebase to buy some Garlic that I’ll plant tomorrow (you’ll have to wait until tomorrow to find out about how I’m planting that), but what confused me the most was that I got 2 varieties, 1 bag of “Casablanca” at £2.99 and 2 bags of “Early Purple Wight” at £1.99 a bag. When I got to the cash desk the “Early Purple Wight” rang up at just 10p each!! Bargain. There was nothing on the package to say it was on 10p, so I think the computer got it wrong. Still I wasn’t going to complain!! I would go back and get some more, but I got the last 2 bags!! Then this afternoon I started off my Onion sets in half toilet rolls, It took me about and hours to get them all done, but then I did have quite a few to do. 66 of “Hercules”, 65 “Certurion” and 61 “Stuttgarter Giant” So hopefully that’ll keep us going for a while once I’ve harvested them. The rain and strong winds have started to arrive, but apparently tomorrow is supposed to be even worse. But at least it’s not snowing which is a good thing.

I have 8 trays in total of Onions all starting to grow. Please don't cry!!

Tuesday 26th January 2016 – Let’s get started on the Onion sets!

It’s that time of year, when I get my Onion Sets started in half toilet rolls. Yes I know it sounds odd, but I’ve done it for years and it works perfectly every year. You can do the same with shallots as well. They’ll get established before you plant them outside in the big wide world and they have to fend for themselves.

Back to School…

I’d love to take my chickens in when I do Lottie and Dottie book events. The kids would love them.

Madge - face onWelcome back to Hen Corner, especially to new visitors since our recent feature in The Guardian.

I know that the children went back to school last week, but I’m going back to school this week and taking some chickens with me!

It seems that now the Spring Term has opened, we are all ready for a new season and are thinking of sunny days, baby chicks and tree blossom.

With the exception of the 5 years that I spent as a city banker, I have always lived by the school terms which aptly coincide with festivals, celebrations and the farmers year. To be honest, I expect it was the farmers’ year that shaped our calendar of celebrations – The Easter story is all about new life, when do we see examples of that on the farm? By the way, let’s keep the children out of school in August as…
