Saturday 14th July 2012 – Oooh Strawberries

When the postman came today I got very excited because my J Parkers brochure had arrived. I don’t usually buy anything from there, but all my strawberries need replacing and I know they have a very small fruit section. The my utter amazement I saw that they had a special offer on page 74 for strawberries, 75 plants for £24.97!!!. If you spend over £10 you get £5 off. Therefore they work out at 27p per plant! Of couse they add on the P&P of £3.99, but even still that’s a bargain. So I’ve just ordered myself some new plants. If you need some new strabs, that’s the place to go. They have loads of other offers, so it’s well worth a look. You can find them online. http://www.jparkers.co.uk/

  1. Hi Claire,

What happened to your existing plants? I would have thought you would have had lots of runners. I have so far 405 new plants.

    • Some are still ok, but they need a good sort out, which I’ll do when they’ve finished fruiting. A lot of the plants are about 6 years old, and just need replacing, there’s only a certain amount of runner that you can control. As the plants get older they don’t produce runners. The 3 types I’ve ordered are different varieties so the fruiting season will be longer. Sometimes I just feel like a change.

Any luck on finding the Pineberries yet Claire ?

    • Yes, found them, and you’re right, they are expensive. I looked on 1 sight and they were going to charge £5.99 for P&P!! I’ll have a look in garden centres and see if I can find some. They do look fab, and I want to grow some, but not with delivery at that price.

  3. Claire hoe do you take a good Ph soil test, R soil seam’s 2 acid 4.5/5.0

    • The easiest way is to buy a cheap kit form a garden centre and follow the instructions on the packet. Take samples for 3 or 4 places around your plot to get an overall idea of the average ph of the soil. If the soil is too acid, then you can add lime. If it’s too alkaline them add garden manure/compost. To be honest with you I’ve never tested my soil I just add manure in the autumn and it re addresses the balance.
