Monday 16th April 2012

Well George went back to school today, but Emily doesn’t go back until tomorrow. She’s old enough for me to leave her for a couple of hours and go down the allotment. I’m not far away and she’s quite sensible (most of the time anyway).
Got more of the white onions in, not quite all of them, hopefully I’ll be able to finish them off tomorrow. I think I’ve got about 25 or so to go. I’ve filled another bed with them, so will have to find another bed in which to pop the last few in. I’ve also dug up all my leeks from last year. They made it through the winter, and look fantastic. I’ll be using them instead of onions for a while.

im thinking of starting growing veg can you give me some good pointers and some basics. And could you give me a idea of what sort of things are easy to grow and what to start with thank-you

    • Hi there,
Welcome to the world of gardening. It’s very addictive, so be warned. The best things to start with, and all these can be sown now are potatoes (go to a garden centre and get some seed potatoes), carrot seeds, peas or mangetout, onion sets (these can be found at a garden centre). They in about the beginning of May go and buy a few small vegetable plants, say 4 tomatoes (try and find different varieties), 1 courgette and 6 to 8 runner bean or climbing french bean plants. Just start with these few, then you won’t be over whelmed and then next year add a couple more.
I hope you find this useful, and if you have any questions, just ask.
      Claire
