Monday 9th April 2012

Well I was hoping to go down the allotment today, but the weather was yucky, so instead I sowed the following seeds: Sweetcorn varieties were Rising Sun and Snobaby, and Courgettes variety Sunstripe. They’re yellow with white stripes, I thought they looked interesting.
It’s been a great long weekend with lots done at the allotment and in the greenhouse, so I’m one happy bunny.

Hi Claire, I’ve been watching your video on sweetcorn, and have done as you suggested, and I’ve got lots of baby shoots, this is my lst time trying sweetcorn, and I only grow in pots, so fingers crossed they come up ok. I planted some early cucumbers about a month ago in my greenhouse, but there is no sign of any of them coming up, I am hoping they do grow, do you have any suggestions please. I’ve bought some more seeds and planted them and I’m leaving them in my extension to see what happens.

    • Sweetcorn needs to be grown in a block rather than a line, so even if you’re growing in pots as long as the pots are put together they’ll be fine. If you’re growing different types keep them apart otherwise you’ll get cross pollination. They are very thirsty plants so make sure you water enough. Cucumbers tend to take a while to come up sometimes so be patient. To keep the humidity either put a plastic bag over the top or a propagator lid.

Thanks for the reply, I have got my cucumbers with a propagator lid on, so I’ll try to be patient. lol. I have watched your video on sweetcorn and am going to do as you say and plant them in blocks in my pots. I love your videos and I have learnt sooooooo much from you, so thank you very
much and keep up the good work. By the way I have bought some Big Drippa watering bags from E-bay (I saw them at my local garden centre) and they look like a very good way of watering my Toms and Cucs in the greenhouse in the summer.
