Had a lovely morning at the allotment today. It wasn’t in as much of a mess as I thought it would be. The Broad beans that I sowed a while back are starting to come through. I also began the horrendus task of weeding. Some of the beds were easier than others, but having weeded enough I sowed the following: Beetroot called “Cardeal” (the seeds were green?) and “Detroit”. Spinach “Bordeaux F1 Hybrid”, Spring onions “Lilia” and Parsnips “Tender and True”. Then this afternoon Mark and I filmed some more videos for you, so keep your eyes peeled. Have a great weekend.

Thanks, Claire, looking forward to the next spate of videos, so informative and encouraging. Could you give some hints and tips on growning carrots. This is the start of my third year of having an allotment year one I was too late for carrots and year two got “ballerinas” with dancy legs and squat bodies, so this year would appreciate some advice for nice straightish carrots. Thanks in anticipation.

  More videos went up over the Easter weekend, so have a look if you haven’t already. There are several videos about growing carrots. If there’s anything you’d like to know just ask. The can be sown March/April time so you’ve still got a bit of time to get them in. To get straight carrots dig the soil with a large fork thoroughly and remove any medium/large stones. Break up any large lumps of soil with a small fork, level off, then sow. They don’t need too much watering because they send down a tap root to find water. If the soil is damp an inch down they don’t need watering. Once they’re established I rarely water mine.

Claire, good afternoon. I remembered my aunt, planting broad beans, and when they were ready, I ate them from the plants. This winter, I had a good harvest of Detroit and Agyptian beetroots, swedes, leeks, carrots, cabbages, chard and other vegetables. I still have some of them, for our salads and suppers. My potatoes are already sprouted. I am waiting to see the videos of new season of your allotment. It’s been long time without your lovely videos!

  My broad beans are coming up well. It’s one of those forgotten vegetable I think, but they’re very versatile. More videos went up over the Easter weekend. I hope you’ve seen them.
