Sorry it’s been a while since I last blogged, but I’ve not been able to get to the allotment as I’ve been helping with a school play. It’s all far too complicated to explain, but it’s going great. I did however, manage to get to the allotment this morning and harvested loads: Carrots, Beetroot, Potatoes, Radish, French Beans, Courgettes and Onions. I made a few films also, which hopefully Mark’ll be able to sort some this weekend. It was great to come home with a box full. I love this time of year, when all the hard work is paying off.

glad to hear it is going well!
I got a tip from someone about the weeds growing through the patio.. When you boil the kettle for a cuppa, put in a bit more than you need, then, when you have what you need for your brew, pour the extra boiling hot water onto the weeds. Do a bit each time, and before you know it, the weeds are dying off. I especially like this as I have a cat who likes to nibble the leaves and a guinea pig that we like to let run around now and again, so I cant use poisonous chemicals on this area.
Hi Claire, I have been following you on youtube, having had an allotment for about 18 mths was interested in what you grow and how. This year I have had to burn all my onion crop because of a little beastie called Allium leaf miner. Have you heard of it? If you have any advice i would be appreciate it. Always enjoy your videos, and look forward to many more!!!! thanks Nicola from worcestershire
Hi Nicola,
I have heard od Allium Leaf Miner, it’s come from Sweden I think. No Chemicals can stop it at the moment. Next year try sowing your onions a little later, say end of April onwards. I hope this helps.
Sorry you had to burn all your onions this year.
All the best for next year

Hi Nicola,
Oh you poor thing to have had Allium Leaf Miner. Yes I have heard about it, and that it’s only been in the UK for about 10 years. The only way to avoid it seems to be to plant Onions out from May, and if you have to plant sooner then cover them with fleece or the like.
Try again next year, and take the precautions I’ve suggested and hopefully they be protected.
I hope that everything else in your garden is okay.
All the best,
Claire
